Welcome to Photo Next Live again. I'm Mr. Daps. I'm Clocky. And we are so excited that we get to
0:37
celebrate Thanksgiving with this episode. This was a inspired episode. Is that
0:42
what we Yes. Um maybe loosely inspired. But what are we talking about today or
0:49
looking at today? Today we're going to look at the tree. And we say the tree. It was Swiss Family
0:55
Robinson Treehouse. It was Tarzan's treehouse. I think it's always going to be Swiss Family Robinson. It's Adventureland Treehouse now, but
1:01
with the with the Swiss Family Robinson with a with a nod to the Swiss Family Robinson.
1:06
It's got a funny name now, right? Yeah. Um, and why are we doing Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse today? Because in the
1:13
in the book and in the movie, they include in that a Thanksgiving feast and
1:18
give thanks for what they have, which is themselves and survival. And we've got photos that have survived the test of
1:25
time. And we'll take a look at what's what's still there, what's changed, what's changed and changed
1:31
back. And before you give us comments, we know that it's not the American Thanksgiving feast. They're heading to New Calonia,
1:39
right? Ah, I think so. They This was a just giving thanks meal, but that's
1:45
really what it should be about anyway, right? Yeah. It's November time to give thanks. Exactly. And eat lots of good food,
1:51
turkey, ham, whatever it is you like. Anyway, we're thankful for you and uh hope you enjoy this episode as you hear
1:57
the Montreal go by behind us. And in front of us, just right over that way, is the tree.
2:02
Is the tree. Actually, can we see the tree? We might be able to see the tree. It's debatable. It's possible.
2:09
Um, also let us know in the comments if you know where we are filming from today cuz this is kind of a fun little uh I
2:14
don't know Easter egg. It's also something that we might have to take pictures of today because in a future
2:21
episode this might be an area of the the resort that doesn't exist anymore. This would not surprise me at all. It always
2:27
surprises me that it's lasted as long as it has. All right, should we look at some pictures? Let's look at some pictures. Here we go.
2:33
After our really long intro wasn't so long. So, if you watched last episode, we actually had this same group in our
2:39
last episode. So, this is a picture of the treehouse with four young people in
2:45
front of it. We have reoccurring guests. Is that what you're saying? Yeah, we have reoccurring guests. We have this group from July 1964, so June
2:53
or July of 1964, enjoying the treehouse, which at that point would have been four
3:01
60 60 or 61. treehouse was in. We'll look that up for the second part.
3:10
So, that is the whole treehouse. I love it. I love that you can see the old entrance, the old staircase.
3:19
It is interesting how the water wheel is is it in a different place now? Like it's moved because it's it's kind of too
3:27
So, having done these photos before, I don't know how much the water wheel has moved. If it has maybe a foot.
3:33
So just just how we walk up is different. Yeah. Not nearly as much as you would think.
3:38
So yeah. Fascinating. Right. So that's And then what I was going to pull take a look at that. As always, I love their outfits. Like
3:45
the guy with the checkered shirt is fantastic. There's a guy in the middle. He might be a cast member um that has a
3:51
hat kind of on the back of his head, but there's actually quite a few interesting hats as you look um at this closer. And
4:00
it it's such a wonderful snapshot, if you will, of time and
4:07
fashion and also of the park when you look there is no way you could get this
4:12
picture today. There's Yeah. Like it is never that empty during the day. Like maybe the first five minutes
4:19
that the park is open, but you're not going to get a Oh, I'm just going to walk up with like four people on the
4:25
entire attraction. The other thing that's interesting about this is notice the fence around the attraction which is
4:33
kind of fun as well. And if you look very closely, let's see. Do we see it?
4:38
Okay, you can see it there. The boy or possibly girl on the far
4:44
left has the giant hat with the feather.
4:51
The old feather hat. Oh, that's awesome. on top of the I mean there's someone in either a fedora or a
4:57
trill beam. That's that's the one I'm wondering if it's a cast member. Could be because look at like he has a vest also and it looks like he might have like
5:03
some sort of a pack on his belt and um that is very fun.
5:09
I just also love how open it is. Oh yeah. Like when you look at how you could just walk around and you could
5:15
just see everything like now it's kind of grown in and there's more I think fences maybe there too and
5:21
and more directional. Yeah, it's it's it's more directional is a very good word to put for that one.
5:27
All right. Should we look at the next one? All right. Yeah, let's go. We're going to go into color. We don't have a year on this one, but the world is a carousel of color.
5:34
There we have the tree in full color. A little bit wider of a shot. Looking at
5:40
this, I would guess I love that our full color is kind of sepia always.
5:46
I mean, how old do you think this picture is? I would say this is probably 70s. Okay.
5:51
So, it's 50 years old. Looking at the difference between the two, right? Cuz this is almost the same shot.
5:57
Isn't it amazing that the two pieces of paper you're holding are miles older than us,
6:04
right? For now. If only we look that good when we're uh
6:09
that old. 50 and 60s years old. So, we have the blown up version here as
6:15
you can look at it there. And nothing that we can see in detail.
6:21
We can see the sign for the Swiss Family Robinson treehouse. The left is so much more open than it is today cuz now they
6:26
have the uh I don't know what it's called, but it's got all the equipment and the the
6:31
painting and stuff on the left. Well, and Indiana Jones butts up right
6:36
to it, too. True. Yeah, that's that's also a huge difference. So, here we have this one. This in full
6:42
color. We'll be able to kind of see this today. The thing I like about this, too, is it
6:48
really leaves a lot of the story open to imagination. So, you can imagine the Swiss Family Robinson worrying about
6:54
tigers and and animals and coming up and things like that. Like, there's a definite thought process to survival in
7:01
the way that this was built and rebuilt. And um that is very fun to see, I think.
7:07
All right, the next one. Again, we don't have years on this one. This one, this one amuses me a lot. And this one's interesting because we're
7:13
going to I'm going to show you this. I mean, these little dots on the back aren't code for what year it is. No, I wish it's code for what kind of an
7:20
album it used to be in. You see on the back? Careful. The glue you use. We've learned over time not to use certain glues
7:27
anymore. So there we have uh two people enjoying I guess enjoying
7:32
one looking like she's enjoying one looking might be enjoying slightly annoyed that she's getting her photo taken in the Swiss Family Robinson
7:39
treehouse. And what's interesting is this scanned better than it Oh yeah, it totally did. We'll show this
7:46
in the final episode. But um so this was the mother and father's
7:52
Oh no. Oh no. We're on the wheel. Sorry. The wheel. Oh, this is We're on the wrong picture. the wrong.
7:58
So, this was the observant like it would open. That was mother and father's room where it could open to the to the uh
8:03
to the outside to the outside and you could look up through the ceiling and see the the stars at night, which I always thought
8:09
was a very fun um idea for a house like
8:16
just be able to open up the wall. Other than other than you think of now having traveled to tropical areas of the world,
8:24
the bugs and the and the the lizards and the whatever.
8:30
You can see you can barely see it there, but you can see the top of the building. This must have been taken late in the
8:35
day cuz you can see a little bit of the sky right in the background, but it doesn't nothing looks bright.
8:41
And they clearly used flash, right? And based on the outfits, I would say
8:46
this is 70s. This has got to be mid70s at least.
8:52
Yeah. Which will bring us to the second photo of the same two, which is where mother does seem happy
8:57
instead of not ready. Um much happier in this photo. Yes. See if I can get that angled perfectly.
9:04
And this is now the observatory or the the daughter's room. The upstairs room.
9:10
It is now. Yeah, it is now. I'm actually forgetting what it is at the moment.
9:19
Having just walked this for for I like to call pre-search because we've already researched this.
9:25
This was pre-searching the episode. The
9:30
the steps up there and that look still looks the same. Surprisingly, it is amazing how much of the structure has
9:38
stayed the same through all iterations of this tree, which is gorgeous. And um
9:44
I think the things that have changed so much is what's come up around it, grown up around it, you know, props, maybe a
9:51
maybe a fence here and there. Well, and the addition of the addition of the Tarzan extra
9:56
part of the tree, which is now gone, which is now gone. So, it's almost like they re
10:02
they put it back to square one a bit. All right. A little bit, but like Yeah, it's it's
10:07
interesting how which I think was a very good move. And our fifth photo
10:14
is this one right here. Our favorite. No, I don't know if it's our favorite or not. Oh, yeah, that's right. We haven't even Man, this is going to be a hard one.
10:20
This is going to be a hard I think I have a favorite. I like the back of this has written treehouse in Adventure Land.
10:26
I'm glad you can read that. That's That's an N or 459F.
10:32
Right. There you go. Um, so this is the the entrance/exit.
10:37
This is the entrance from the exit. Okay. the entrance from the exit. So, you still walk over this body of
10:43
water. I would say the water is less from what is here,
10:48
but I love how much water is there. It actually makes more continuity for that
10:54
that um little waterfall you see towards the current exit. I think
11:00
maybe Yeah, that it was the water flowing. And this I would Oh, this says 63. This is
11:05
definitely 1963 August. So, this is July or August. We see a gentleman in shorts and and shoes
11:11
and a hat. And a hat and a hat with a with buttons. Yeah, those are pins. That's awesome. I'm sure he wasn't pin trading, but he
11:18
definitely enjoyed his travels and predecessor to a pin trader, right? Wore wore his uh
11:25
Once again, look at how open this area is, though. I love that. You can see people in the background
11:31
here. So, that would have been the the bizaar. Mhm. Over that way. And yeah, 63.
11:36
And and what's fun about back then is Adventureland really does feel like it was kind of this adventurous
11:43
you could go anywhere. You could you could have any experience. You could have a truck backing up right in front
11:48
of you. Um maybe not. But uh with squeaky brakes. I wonder if you
11:55
sorry about that. But I loved back in the older days when it truly did
12:03
feel like you were walking right into Swiss Family Robinson or you were you were truly walking into was it the
12:08
African Queen? Right. Um and it's still an incredible land, but it
12:16
doesn't have that kind of wilderness jungle feel that it used to have. Mainly
12:22
just because it's so darn crowded now. and and as they've filled it in more and as people also all want to go visit
12:29
Indiana Jones or Jungle Cruise or Tropical Hideway or whatever, it it's definitely
12:36
changed the vibe a bit and and that's cool but also kind of a bummer. But, you
12:42
know, whatever. What do we got? So, for for Doug, who is yelling at the screen right now? Yes. Sorry, Doug.
12:47
Swiss Family opens Swiss Family Robinson the movie opened in 1960. The attraction opened in 1962.
12:54
That's right. So, also within a year or two. Yeah, within a year or two it was up. The interesting thing I learned today
13:00
from my own podcast listening to my episode about Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse when it opened C Attraction,
13:06
which makes sense with the fence and within a year B ticket attraction.
13:11
So, was that Huh. So, they took it down from C to a B ticket. You would wonder. I guess that makes
13:18
sense because you think of the movie being fairly recent originally as it gets a little bit further from the
13:25
consciousness and you don't have Disney Plus, you don't have DVDs, VHS even,
13:30
you could see it not being having the same staying power as, you know, things
13:37
that that are front and center to people as they uh get to go around. Um, this is going to be interesting.
13:43
All right. Favorite photo. That's why I'm looking at cuz this is this is where I always have the conundrum of do I go
13:48
with the one that amuses me the most because of people's faces and reactions or outfits
13:53
or do I go with the one that's like oh yeah I would frame that and put it on my wall. I mean this that's that's what I'm that's the frame
14:00
and put on my wall. Yeah, this is frame and put on your wall. Like if you had uh I'm going to say this. I I have I've had people
14:05
contact me about hey can you share your photos? I'm trying to do an Adventureland themed bathroom and I want
14:12
some old Adventureland photos. Yeah, I've had someone do that and I would say this. This would go into an adventure
14:18
room in a heartbeat with an old wood frame even. So would So would this one? Yeah,
14:24
these ones maybe a bit depending on how much even that one would be very amusing cuz it's got our our our family.
14:31
It's almost like carousel progress if we keep finding this family.
14:37
Quick question before we decide. For people that have pictures like these at
14:42
home, what is the best way to store them for posterity? Oo,
14:48
one, keep the negatives. Two, scan them digitally and then like as far as holding on to
14:55
these photos, would it be good to put them in like a slide in thing? A slide in vest. I mean, you you can tell from now that one's not. These ones
15:01
definitely were in some kind of an album. any of those sticky albums, taking them out is the absolute worst.
15:06
It everyone thought it was going to be great, but it but even I would think having the when you slide them in that would protect
15:12
them a little bit from the right and keep them flat elements and flat that would help too.
15:17
Um and probably what do you think about like scrapbook cuz that's that's kind of glue and stuff too and tape.
15:24
I mean I with old photos I wouldn't do it. If you were going to reprint a photo, put in a scrapbook, go for it. Okay, there you go. See, you got a you
15:30
got a photo next tip today. Um, all right. We are going to pick our favorite.
15:35
This is hard. Um, it is funny. We have a picture of mother and daughter. It
15:40
appears one of them. Both of them look zoned out and the other one at least mother is smiling. And that amuses me
15:47
for the two of them. So that is that one. That's the smiling one. Yes.
15:54
That's the I can't believe you made me climb this whole tree when we could have gone I' I've got I've got to go with this one
16:00
just because that the the faded color but also just the overall look and it'll be an adventure to figure out when this
16:07
was taken cuz there's probably something to do
16:12
with that sign and the fencing and nope
16:17
that's the same. Yeah. Uh yeah, I think I'm going to have to go with the same one. like I'd already picked it before I
16:24
I talked about everything else. I was trying to change my mind if it didn't work. Um, this one could almost be like
16:31
one of those really pretty drawings, you know, like the the pencil sketch. Like I would love to see this as a pencil
16:37
sketch or just printed like blown up like 8 by 8 by 10 or something and and
16:45
that would be very cool. Um, I'm also wondering if the tree heights actually in the
16:52
background give us. So, this is similar time period because look at how tall the
16:57
tree is here. Mhm. And there. It looks similar to me.
17:03
Yeah. This although they also could have been more proactive about keeping trees from being too tall around. This was Family
17:09
Robinson treehouse. making sure the treehouse looks as tall as possible because it today it does not look nearly
17:15
as massive as it did when I was a kid when it kind of just stood out among the trees. And
17:22
we don't have this photo with us, but I've seen a photo of No, actually it's not a photo. It's a postcard. It's postcard of the Jungle Cruise, and you
17:28
can see them building the Swiss Family Robinson treehouse. That's a cool picture. That would be very cool. Uh future episode, huh?
17:34
Always. Absolutely. All right. So, now we're going to do the the All of this is fun,
17:39
but what's the next fun part? Oh, but we use the uh camera flash snap magic and we will see you on the inside
17:47
and the outside of the treehouse. There we go. We have made the long track. We are now at the non-Swiss
17:54
Family Robinson treehouse, the Adventureland Treehouse with uh Walt Disney's
18:01
inspired by Walt Disney Swiss Family Robinson. Disney has a very unique way of coming up with long titles, don't
18:07
they? Um, so we are going to I guess we could start with that first picture right now because we are in the
18:14
right place. We're going to flip this around in a second, show you what we're seeing, and then show you how that picture is different. So, this will be
18:20
fun. I think that kind of works. There we go. All right. This is actually about the
18:26
right spot cuz there's the stairs. Stairs stairs. very different now.
18:36
Much more uh ADA compliant and safe and uh
18:41
planned out. It's interesting how these stairs went
18:47
down more like out instead of around more a little bit more compact.
18:53
Yeah. So that's the first one of this location
18:58
also. So this is when we talk about the water wheel. Mhm. It may have moved a bit.
19:05
Yeah, it did. Cuz look at how So, it's off to the left more,
19:11
but that's also cuz the uh the little river is is smaller, too. And now it's
19:16
just off the center of the uh of the tree itself.
19:22
I will say this, I feel like they have cleaned out some trees around it because it does look more open than than
19:31
previous years. All right. Do we have another one? We have another one in this same area,
19:37
which this is this is actually negating what I just said about the wheel, right?
19:42
Cuz the wheel wheel I'm going to back up just a little bit. There you go. We look
19:48
up. I mean, obviously, we noticed the two pylons that were part of Tarzan's
19:54
treehouse that are there now that weren't in the original picture.
20:00
The old sign had the uh the little roof over it. But the new sign is very
20:06
similar. Oh, dude. When you look at it stylistically,
20:14
that is fascinating. Uh the the the decks or the uh
20:20
the rails almost identical, right? In fact, there too.
20:26
Like it's amazing how much this is structurally stayed the same.
20:34
I guess the um when they added Tarzan's ship at the front, right, that that
20:40
changed that significantly. And the crow's nest too wasn't there,
20:47
but still very similar. One thing I don't have that I remember
20:53
reading about. So, so they changed at some point from green
20:59
to red leaves. So, this is an older photo. Yes. I was like, I actually remember
21:05
seeing pictures of that now that you mention it. And mostly because the the green would fade and the red wouldn't fade as
21:11
they can hold it together longer. And thankfully, uh, technology has improved through the years. Yeah. Right.
21:18
Well, should we head in and take a look? Let's head in and see if we can find I'm tempted to just keep this running and let people see what we're seeing
21:26
just because it's not every day we come here and maybe you don't get to come here every day as a viewer.
21:32
And it's leg day. So, let's start walking. And it's leg day. So, you can hear us huffing and puffing up this uh wonderful
21:40
however many stairs it is. Cuz I'm already lost count. That was nine. Okay, that was nine. But see, as we were
21:46
talking about earlier, you have all these walls now and a ostrich
21:59
and a studio. Do you take away steps through this?
22:04
I don't know.
22:10
Is this the back side of the water? Back side of waterfall.
22:16
All right. So, our first room that we really need to go to is the
22:23
Which one is it currently? Flocky.
22:42
It is quite popular today. as is everything.
22:49
I think clocky is counting steps. I hope
23:02
was this one of them. This This would have been one of them. So, this would have been right here.
23:08
Let these people go by. We'll move over here.
23:13
from back in the day. Is this about the angle? I think so. So,
23:19
you got this here and this is kind of the view today.
23:25
They've obviously updated the organ and added musical instruments, all that jazz.
23:31
What do we think? I think I think that would have been it. I think so, too. cuz this is all new for the tartan stuff,
23:37
which is weird now having the flashbacks to my childhood of being up here and looking out the other way.
23:43
That's really cool.
23:51
Have you been counting the stairs? I lost count. Me, too.
24:01
All right, this one's easy. But all right, here.
24:07
There. Which this one has changed quite a bit.
24:12
Go for it. And uh this has got a more mystical
24:18
whatever feel you want to it. Should we walk around the corner?
24:26
And uh this used to be a bedroom, right? Right. There's a bed right over there
24:32
and then you could open up and look at the sky. Now there's uh
24:37
fancy equipment in here.
24:49
All right. Now we're going to go look out for fire ants apparently.
24:55
So, my question for you, Clocky, did you have a favorite room
25:00
when you were a kid walking up here? I mean, and why was it the brother's room? No.
25:06
No, I mean, it it probably was cuz it just seemed like the most fun, the best lookout.
25:12
Did they have hammocks back in the day? Do I remember that? I think it had hammocks.
25:18
I mean, now we can look into outer space, right? Absolutely amazing. It is fun seeing how many people are having
25:24
fun here today though, right? Because there was a while where I just didn't feel like people really came up here.
25:31
It's also funny watching people going up the wrong way. Always. All right. Should we go look at the the
25:36
final exit? The final exit. I'll follow you.
25:57
And as this is our Thanksgiving episode, we should give thanks that from now on we're going downhill, right? Cuz
26:04
downstairs are much nicer than going upstairs.
26:23
We are on the
26:37
very fun just as you go through here listening to the story being told as you see the different buildings. rooms,
26:44
whatever this is up here, and then hearing the music, the sound effects,
26:53
and then looking out and seeing the Mark Twain or the Columbia.
27:00
It's a very unique experience that only could happen at Disneyland.
27:06
One worth being thankful for. You can even look closely and see a uh
27:12
temple rising in the jungle.
27:21
Apparently the tea is ready. At least I think that's what that is.
27:27
All right. So, where do we need to go for this one? I think we need to head towards the accessibility ramp.
27:32
We almost need to like Oh, yeah. We can do that. Yeah. Yeah. You're you're right on that way
27:47
cuz this would have been that. We're getting close.
27:52
It would have been here.
27:58
Maybe a little bit to our right. Let's go like Oh, it's two more steps backwards.
28:05
Yeah. No. So, that bridge is basically where it used to be, right?
28:11
There used to be more water. Yeah. It'll be interesting to see how well
28:16
these microphones do with this water, but uh it's amazing to me how similar that is.
28:23
Obviously, the the staircase staircase came out
28:29
further. Yeah. So, it would have been above us. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Or above or to the right
28:36
possibly coming back around. Okay. So, this part might have I wonder if originally it actually came out over
28:41
there like to the right more instead of the left. Oh, from Oh, from there. Yeah.
28:46
Cuz you can see where those chairs were as we were coming down basically in the middle of the screen right now.
28:53
That could have been a that could have been the turn and then come straight out and then that would make this picture work easier.
29:01
I think I I think you're right. I think that was the old turn cuz that looks like it was something now
29:07
that I'm looking for it. And if you know, let us know in the comments. We're
29:12
looking at you, Doug. Uh, that's very cool. All right. Well, this
29:18
has been our Thanksgiving episode. We hope you've enjoyed it. What should people do, Clacky? You should like,
29:25
subscribe, comment where you can. Let us know if there's anything you want to see next. This is two in a row. All of
29:30
November in the parks in the November in the parks with photos. Maybe this will become a thing, right?
29:36
It's not going to become a thing next month because uh somebody isn't coming back doesn't like hanging out with us
29:41
anymore. And we got we have a lot of Christmas to get through a lot of holidays. We might have a special episode coming
29:48
up as well that hopefully you will enjoy. If you do enjoy these, also on top of everything that Clocky just said,
29:54
please share this as well. the more people that hear it, the more people that'll have insight and knowledge that maybe we don't have or maybe even
30:00
pictures that we don't have that you'd like us to to talk about and explore. And that just makes this that much more fun. But happy Thanksgiving everybody.
30:08
We look forward to uh geeking out with you on our next episode of Photoics.
30:14
Have a great one. See you next month.
