On this day in 1956, the Humphrey the Bear cartoon ‘In the Bag’ was released. Tourist season in Brownstone Park is over, but the litter they left is overflowing. Ranger J. Audubon Woodlore devises a scheme to get the bears to clean up the park for him, but soon Humphrey is the only one left holding the bag. The swinging cleanup tune, “Put It in the Bag,” became so popular it was released as “The Humphrey Hop.” ‘In the Bag’ would be the second of two dedicated Humphrey the Bear shorts and his last film appearance until 2023’s ‘Once Upon a Studio.’ [70 years ago in 2026]
