Disney has found a director for its live-action Cinderella spin-off. Akiva Schaffer has been hired by Disney to direct Stepsisters. This film will be a comedic look at Cinderella’s stepsiblings, Anastasia and Drizella. Schaffer will be joined by his The Naked Gun scribes Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, who will write the script. They previously wrote Disney’s Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, which Schaffer directed. Their screenplay will be based on a script that Michael Montemayor (Tangled) originally wrote.

The movie that looks at these villains in Cinderella isn’t the first time Disney has made a film based on villains from a classic film. It previously took a look at Maleficent with Angelina Jolie taking on the role of the mistress of evil in Maleficent and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. These two movies offered a unique take on Disney’s classic animated film, Sleeping Beauty. Disney is also working on a film that has Gaston from Beauty and the Beast as the central character. The company continues to invest in other live-action remakes of Disney animated features, including the upcoming Moana and Tangled films.

Cinderella was originally made by Disney as an animated film in 1950. It tells the story of the title character, who has seen both of her parents pass away, and now lives with her evil stepmother and stepsisters. Her life changes when her Fairy Godmother allows her to go to a royal ball where she meets Prince Charming and they fall in love. The film was remade as a live-action film and released in 2015 with Lily James in the title role. For this version of the film, Sophie McShera and Holliday Grainger portrayed Drisella and Anastasia, respectively.

At this point, there have been no casting announcements made for this film. Specifics about the story are also under wraps. Ali Bell is producing Stepsisters for Party Over Here, and Disney Live Action Executive Vice President Jessica Virtue will oversee with creative executive Cady Stark.
