He received an Academy Award for Tender Mercies (1983) and seven nominations during his seven-decade career. Every movie he appeared in was better because of it.

The news was shared by his wife, Luciana. She shared the following:

Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort.

To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything. His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court. For each of his many roles, Bob gave everything to his characters and to the truth of the human spirit they represented. In doing so, he leaves something lasting and unforgettable to us all. Thank you for the years of support you showed Bob and for giving us this time and privacy to celebrate the memories he leaves behind.

Disney fans will know Duvall as Joseph Pulitzer. He brought gravitas to this movie and helped turn it from what could have been a silly musical into a movie with risk, heart, and meaning. Duvall was part of an incredible team that included the music of Alan Menken, along with the talents of director Kenny Ortega, and actors that included Christian Bale and Anne-Margaret.

Throughout his career, Robert Duvall made memorable moments with memorable characters. Dating back to Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), his performances stood out. One of the most well-known Robert Duvall lines was from Apocalypse Now, where he said, “I love the smell of napalm in the morning.”

Robert Selden Duvall was born on January 5, 1931, in San Diego, California. His father was in the Navy and would eventually be an admiral. This led to Duvall relocating and ultimately settling in the area around Annapolis, Maryland. After graduating from high school, Duvall attended Principia College in Elsah, Illinois. There, he majored in drama. He spent two years in the Army before moving to New York, where he studied at Sanford Meisner’s Neighborhood Playhouse. During this time, he was roommates with aspiring actor Dustin Hoffman. The duo was also friends with Gene Hackman, who also aspired to be a thespian.

Duvall acted on the stage before being cast in To Kill a Mockingbird, which changed the course of his life. This led to decades on the silver screen for Duvall. He brought to life many iconic characters throughout his life on the big screen, small screen, and stage.

He is survived by his wife.
