Disney offers some incredible limited-edition dolls for fans to collect. These are beautifully detailed recreations of some favorite Disney characters. Teams at Disney take great care to make dolls that capture the spirit, style, and storytelling details that are known and loved by fans. The newest doll that has been released is Cruella de Vil. It is now available on the Disney Store.

The newest doll coming to DisneyStore.com today (January 26) is none other than Cruella de Vil, the fearsome and fashionable villain from Disney’s 101 Dalmatians.

Cruella is instantly recognizable thanks to her black-and-white color palette with pops of rich red, devilish and dramatic energy, and couture-inspired attire.

I was eager to learn more about how this doll balances honoring iconic interpretations of the character while still creating something new for collectors, so I spoke with J. Fuchs, Design Manager, Dolls & Souvenirs. J helped to bring Cruella to life and provided some fascinating insights into the design process for this new doll.

When asked about which versions of the character most influenced the doll knowing Cruella has appeared onscreen across animation and live action, as well as throughout Disney Parks, J shared that the goal was to be rooted in the classic animated character with elements that felt more modern. “The coat, face, and overall color scheme are pure classic Cruella,” said J, “with nods to the live action film in the more modern hairstyle, mixed metal jewelry, and dramatic design of the dress.”

J and the team also knew that Cruella’s bold attitude and iconic fashion sense needed to be translated into physical details like fabric selection and silhouette. Her larger-than-life fur coat, scarlet gloves and lips, and a sleek black dress are staple elements of her look, with contemporary components such as the contrasting snake print and faux leather materials, the asymmetrical cut of her attire, and glossy pleather over-the-knee boots.

J even mentioned that the coat neckline, which has a medallion with “CDV” etched on, is detachable for multiple customizable looks.

I was most curious to ask J about the little things that fans should be most excited about when they get their hands on Cruella, knowing that the doll gives collectors an opportunity to take in all the thoughtful details and intricacies up close.

“The fun for her is definitely in all the detailed jewelry and unusual fabrics. It’s not often I get to work with different textures like this – from the fuzziest to the sleekest we can find, to the ultra-shimmer fun of the coat lining, so that was the most exciting part of her outfit for me,” J explained. “The soft matte, snake-y suede on her dress is probably my all-time favorite material I’ve gotten to incorporate in an outfit!”
