Last week, the Wang Fuk Court estate in Tai Po was devastated when several high-rise buildings in Hong Kong turned into a fiery inferno. As the death toll continued to rise, Hong Kong Disneyland cancelled its nighttime fireworks spectaculars. Now, Hong Kong Disneyland has announced that it will be donating HK$10 million in relief as the city reels from the worst fire in over a hundred years. Hong Kong Disneyland says the cash and in-kind gifts will go toward providing immediate assistance and ongoing support, including temporary accommodation, emotional and psychological care.
The announcement was made on social media by Hong Kong Disneyland with the following post:
Amid the devastation caused by the fires in Tai Po, Disney offers its deepest sympathy to the families and communities affected. We extend our sincere and profound thanks to the firefighters, paramedics and community organizations that saved lives and continue to provide critical support.
Working closely with Hong Kong agencies and nonprofit organizations, Disney is committing more than HK$10 million in cash and in-kind donations to provide immediate assistance and ongoing support, including temporary accommodation, emotional and psychological care for those affected by the Tai Po fires, especially for children and families.
Rooted in Hong Kong for 20 years, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort remains committed to supporting our surrounding community during this recovery journey.
The death toll in this tragedy continues to rise and as of Monday morning was 151 people as of Monday. That number is expected to grow as at least 30 people are still known to be missing. The fire began on Wednesday, and firefighters battled it for days. Ultimately, the fire spread to seven of the eight blocks of the collection of towers. The inferno could be seen lighting up the skies of Hong Kong from all around.
Hong Kong has already begun a criminal investigation into the blaze. The buildings had been under construction since 2024. Already, 14 people have been arrested in relation to the fire. Along with the arrests, authorities said that they had “immediately begun comprehensive investigation along the lines of manslaughter.” Initial reports seem to indicate that safety guidelines were bypassed in the construction process.
