A Thanksgiving tradition that dates back around a century continued in New York City this year. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade kicked off Thanksgiving morning and the Christmas season with the arrival of Santa Claus at the end. Santa wasn’t the only magic that was found during the parade, however. There was plenty of Disney magic to be found throughout the parade. There were balloons representing characters flying over the parade, and the Disney Cruise Line returned with its float and the theme song to its newest ship, the Disney Destiny.
As Toy Story celebrates its 30th anniversary, Buzz Lightyear returned to the parade. Previously, Buzz appeared in the parade in balloon form from 2008 to 2013. This balloon measures 45.5 feet in height, 58 feet in length, and 39 feet in width.
Spider-Man also floated through the streets of New York City. Spidey first appeared in 1981 in the parade as a costumed character. His first appearance as a balloon was in 1987. This year, the Spidey balloon is 44 feet high, 77.5 feet long, and 34 feet wide. Spider-Man would also appear in the float for the Disney Cruise Line.
As viewers heard There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow on NBC’s coverage of the parade, Minnie Mouse floated through New York. The Minnie Mouse balloon is 60 feet long, 60 feet tall, and 34 feet wide. Minnie Mouse has also appeared as a character in the parade multiple times, including this year’s parade.
The Disney Cruise Line was also represented in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Front and center this year was the Disney Destiny. Its theme song, This is Your Destiny, was performed for the NBC broadcast. It showcased both Captain Mickey Mouse, Captain Minnie Mouse, and multiple heroes and villains. The theme of the ship is heroes and villains, and this year’s characters and song fit in perfectly.
