Development Resumes on Disney’s Live-Action ‘Tangled’ With A Potentially Interesting Casting of Mother Gothel

,

Disney has resumed development on a live-action Tangled. Deadline is reporting that the House of Mouse is revisiting the idea with Scarlett Johansson circling the role of Mother Gothel. Michael Gracey, the director of The Greatest Showman, is attached to direct. The script, based on the 2010 animated feature, is being worked on by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.

Scarlett Johansson attends the UK Fan Event to celebrate the release of Marvel Studios’ ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at Picturehouse Central on April 10, 2019 in London, England.

Disney Live-Action Remakes

An adaptation of Tangled into a live-action feature had been paused earlier this year after Snow White underperformed at the box office. However, its live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch was positively received by audiences. It has also currently earned $1.03 billion at the box office. Other live-action remakes of animated features have also done quite well for Disney. This includes The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and Cinderella.

At this point, Disney has not greenlit this project. However, there are lots of reasons to think that it could happen. Tangled made nearly $600 million globally when it was released in 2010. If Scarlett Johansson does attach to the role of Mother Gothel, that could add to Disney’s motivation to move forward with it. Johansson’s movies have garnered $17.7 billion at the box office globally. Johansson has a long-running relationship with The Walt Disney Company that includes her role as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and also the continued development of a Tower of Terror movie. Disney would most likely like to keep this relationship with her.

About Tangled

Tangled tells the story of a young maiden who has grown up in a tower with the woman she thinks is her mother. She has magical, long blond hair that has magical powers, which Mother Gospel uses to maintain her youth. On her 18th birthday, a troublemaker stumbles into her tower, and Rapunzel asks him to help her escape. This starts an adventure where Rapunzel discovers more about the world around her and also herself.

Tangled at Disneyland

The news that Disney is revisiting this story comes as it is also being added to Disneyland’s Storybook Land Canal Boats. Rapunzel’s Tower will be added to the attraction, which is supposed to reopen at the Happiest Place on Earth sometime this winter. This comes as the Disneyland Resort continues to celebrate its 70th anniversary.
