The Muppet Show is making a return in 2026 on Disney+ thanks to the efforts of Seth Rogen. The newest iteration of this classic Muppetational presentation will guest star and be executive-produced by Sabrina Carpenter. This comes 50 years after the original The Muppet Show aired. The hope is that this Muppet Show will be a backdoor pilot for a revival of the series. This new iteration of The Muppet Show will see Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, and the gang returning to their iconic theater to once again produce a variety show.
The following was posted on social media:
It’s time to play the music, it’s time to light the lights, it’s time to get things started as The Muppet Show returns for a triumphant event on Disney+ in 2026 with special guest star @SabrinaCarpenter!
This brand-new installment from The Muppets Studio and Point Grey Pictures will feature Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, and the gang as they return to the Muppet Theatre to put on a variety show filled with music, comedy, and plenty of chaos.
Bringing The Muppet Show to Life
The special will come to life with the performances of longtime Muppet performers Bill Barretta, Dave Goelz, Eric Jacobson, Peter Linz, David Rudman, and Matt Vogel. They will be joined by some other muppet performers to bring the show to life. Goelz was in the original version of The Muppet Show 50 years ago. He originated characters like Gonzo and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, and others.
Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, and Alex McAtee will be executive producing the special for Point Grey Pictures. Albertina Rizzo will write and executive produce; Alex Timbers will direct and executive produce. David Lightbody, Leigh Slaughter, and Michael Steinbach will be executive producers for The Muppets Studio. Matt Vogel and Eric Jacobson are also executive producers. 20th Television and Disney Branded Television will be bringing this new show to screens.
The Muppets
In 1976, The Muppet Show made its debut after pilots of the show aired in 1974 and 1975. The variety show featured The Muppets, which were created by Jim Henson in 1955. Under Henson’s leadership, there were several theatrical movies released. This included 1979’s The Muppet Movie, 1981’s The Great Muppet Caper, and 1984’s The Muppets Take Manhattan. There were also other specials made through the years. The franchise was purchased by The Walt Disney Company in 2004. Since then, Disney has produced two feature films, The Muppets (2001) and Muppets Most Wanted, the Muppets Haunted Mansion (2021) Halloween special, and the series The Muppets Mayhem (2023).
An exact release date has not been shared for this special yet, only that it will be released at some point in 2026. What do you think about The Muppet Show getting a chance at a revival? What would you like to see happen with this? Would else would you like to see in it? Are there any specific segments you would like to see make a return from the original series?
