On this day in 1970, a surreal incident happened at Disneyland when about 300 “Yippies” gathered at the park and caused mischief. The members of the Youth International Party planned the event to protest the Vietnam War. The group took over Tom Sawyer Island for a time, sang alternative words to Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah, and caused some minor damage on Main Street. For only the second time in its history, Disneyland closed early at 7 PM while the instigators were shown out. [55 years ago in 2025]
