Disney Cruise Line Steel Cutting

Construction Begins on Newest Disney Cruise Line Wish-Class Ship

Work has begun on the newest Disney Cruise Line ship in Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. A steel-cutting ceremony was held at the shipyard to begin construction on the newest Wish-class ship for the fleet.

On hand for this milestone ceremony was Joe Schott, president of Disney Signature Experiences, along with Philip Gennotte from Walt Disney Imagineering, Bernd Eikens from Meyer Werft, and Cruise Director Carly Scott for the cutting of the first piece of steel for the next addition to the Disney Cruise Line Fleet. Guest Captain Mickey Mouse was also on hand to help out. Sparks flew as a laser cutter revealed the shape of the next Disney cruise ship.

The cutting of steel is a revered maritime condition that dates back hundreds of years. It means that the construction process has begun for this vessel that is expected to take to sea in 2027. This ship will be approximately 144,000 gross tons, accommodate 4,000 guests, and also be powered by liquefied natural gas, just like its sister ships, the Disney Wish, Disney Treasure, and Disney Destiny.

This is an exciting milestone that marks the beginning of a new era of growth for the Disney Cruise Line. This includes the recently announced addition of four Disney Cruise Line ships between 2027 and 2031. This will also include the introduction of a brand-new class of ships in 2029. On top of that, this expansion of the fleet will see the addition of two new ships later this year. The Disney Destiny will be based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and the Disney Adventure, which will have its homeport in Singapore, along with an agreement between Disney and Oriental Land Company to bring Disney cruise vacations to Japan in 2029.

On top of the steel cutting for this new ship, the Disney Cruise Line will be celebrating another milestone this weekend at Meyer Werft. On Saturday, August 9, the Disney Destiny will float out of the shipyard and into the harbor for the first time. This is a process known as a Float Out and is a significant milestone in the construction process of the ship. This will be a major step closer to the ship setting sail for the first time before it takes its maiden voyage in November.
