Disney has won the weekend box office with its newest Marvel Studios’ film, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. With the success of this film, it also cleared the $3 billion mark at the global box office as well. This marks the fourth year in a row that Disney has reached this level. Currently, Disney’s global box office numbers sit at $3.19 billion.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps had a solid opening weekend. It brought in $218 million globally. It marks the first time that a movie with the first family of Super Heroes has been produced by Marvel Studios since 20th Century Fox was acquired by Disney in 2019.
“Every big storyline that we’ve adapted to make our films, the Fantastic Four appeared in some version of them in the comics, from the Avengers to the Infinity Gauntlet to Civil War,” Kevin Feige, producer and President, Marvel Studios said. “But they weren’t in any of the movies because we didn’t have the rights to them. [Once we gained the rights to the characters], that gave us a huge opportunity to establish them, on their own, in an alternate universe.”
Now that the first family is part of the Marvel Studios family, it appears that this opportunity is being taken advantage of. There are lots of possibilities for the future with this franchise and other franchises that were owned by 20th Century Fox. This could lead to many new and unexplored stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Along the way, it could also benefit the bottom line for The Walt Disney Company that is still recouping its $71.3 billion investment to purchase 20th Century Fox.
