In 1987, one of the greatest parody films of all time was released by Mel Brooks. 40 years later, the world will get to see a sequel to Spaceballs. When this Star Wars parody film arrives in theaters, they will see some familiar faces, along with some new ones. Today, a teaser was released for this sequel to Spaceballs. Along with the teaser, some casting news was released as well.
First off, the comedic genius of Mel Brooks will be returning as Yogurt (Spaceballs’ humorous version of Yoda). In the teaser, Mel Brooks says, “After 40 years, we asked, ‘What do the fans want?’” He answers himself, saying, “But instead, we’re making this movie.” Brooks wrote and directed the original Spaceballs. The sequel is being written by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad. Gad is also rumored to be starring in the movie. However, Amazon MGM Studios has not confirmed that at this point. Josh Greenbaum is directing the film.
Deadline is reporting that Bill Pullman will be reprising his role as Lone Starr, and Rick Moranis will be returning to bring Dark Helmet to life again. The outlet is also reporting that Keke Palmer will be a part of the cast as well.
Beyond the trailer and the confirmation of Mel Brooks being in this movie, there isn’t a lot being revealed at this point. Amazon shared the following about this sequel:
While the title, plot details, and rest of cast are being kept under wraps, the film has been described by those who have not yet read the script as ‘A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two’ but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”
The last time that Mel Brooks appeared on the big screen was for 2005’s The Producers. Since then, he has lent his voice to films but has not appeared as a physical actor. An EGOT winner, Brooks wrote and directed Young Frankenstein, HIgh Anxiety and Blazing Saddles throughout his career. A specific date for the release of this sequel to Spaceballs has not been revealed yet.
The original Spaceballs was released in 1987. It starred Bill Pullman, John Candy, Rick Moranis, and Daphne Zuniga, as well as the vocal talents of Joan Rivers for a C-3P0-like droid. The film wasn’t a hit in theaters, but over time became a cult classic.
This new film was teased by Josh Gad on an Instagram post that said the following:
Just handed in a film script that I think may be the funniest and best thing I’ve ever worked on and I am so freaking excited. Working with my boys @cubanmissiledh and @benjisamit has been heaven on Earth and many other planets as well. Love you boys!
