Ever since it was announced that Scarlett Johansson was attached to a future Twilight Zone movie for Disney, fans have eagerly awaited updates on what it will be. Now, there are updates, but they may not be the updates that everyone is hoping for. The project was announced several years ago, and in an interview with EW, Johannson explained why it has taken so long to get any updates.
“It’s a hard nut to crack. Harder than you think, because the ride itself, there’s some lore to it, but it’s… I don’t want to say thin, but it is, kind of!” The lore is about five people who enter an elevator in the Hollywood Tower Hotel. When the hotel is struck by lightning, these people are transported into the Twilight Zone.
Johannson said that the ride’s story really “doesn’t have so much to dig into” in regards to creating a big Hollywood movie. However, she also thinks this could be a good thing.
“That’s part of the mystery of the ride. It’s been a fun project to work on, because it’s a blue sky project,” explains Johansson. “It has also proved to be a hard nut to crack. But, we’ll crack the case of it. It’s taking shape!”
The film was confirmed by Disney in 2021 after a brief legal dispute with Johansson over Black Widow. At the time, Disney said it “look[s] forward to working together on a number of upcoming projects, including Disney’s Tower of Terror.”
The Tower of Terror is an incredibly popular attraction at several Disney Parks around the globe. The first one was built at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort. Different versions of the attraction now also exist at Tokyo DisneySea at Tokyo Disney Resort and Walt Disney Studios at Disneyland Paris. For a time, there was also a Tower of Terror at Disney California Adventure at the Disneyland Resort.
