Disney has a hit on its hands with Lilo & Stitch. The film has had a very solid opening weekend, which also happens to be over the Memorial Day weekend. This, combined with the success of Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning, made for the biggest Memorial Day weekend ever. Lilo & Stitch is tracking to earn an estimated $183 million as of Sunday, domestically. Overseas, the film did even better and pulled in $341.7 million.
As of three weeks ago, Lilo & Stitch was estimated to only bring in $120 million on its opening weekend. This number went up to $165 million by Thursday. The reality is that the box office numbers trounced all estimates. This comes as those who grew up on the original film and subsequent tv show are turning out in droves to see this new take on the story.
The film started out strong on Thursday night by bringing in a record $14.5 million, the highest of the year to date. It is also the strongest Thursday night opening on Memorial Day weekend for Disney. It is better than Aladdin ($7 million)and The Little Mermaid ($10.3 million). On Friday, the film garnered an impressive $55 million. It also beat the Memorial Day weekend opening of Solo: A Star Wars Story ($14.1 million). Outside of The Walt Disney Company, it is the seventh strongest Memorial Day opening of all time.
