Guests at Tokyo Disney Resort are getting the magical experience of getting to see BDX Droids. These droids are roaming around Tomorrowland at Tokyo Disneyland and delighting guests. This comes as they are also now appearing at Disneyland Paris. They will also be appearing at Walt Disney World Resort this year as part of their global tour. Tokyo Disney Resort announced that the BDX Droids will be continuing to wander around Tokyo Disneyland through June 30, 2025.
The announcement was shared on social media with a video showing a couple of the droids in action. The post can be seen here:
About BDX Droids
BDX droids first appeared at Disneyland in the fall of 2023. Since then, they returned to Disneyland’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge during Season of the Force last year and then appeared at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.
During The Future of World-Building at Disney panel at SXSW, it was revealed that these little free-standing and personality-filled droids will be appearing in The Mandalorian and Grogu. During their world tour, they also appeared at Star Wars Celebration Japan last month.
The technology that brings these droids to life is nothing short of magical. They learn how to walk and interact via a virtual simulator. They then learn to walk physically, and each has its own distinct personality and name. The whole process really is incredible and was shown to Daps Magic on a visit to Walt Disney Imagineering in 2024. The droids continue to be modified and improved. Imagineers learn from their experiences to make these droids more durable, have more character, and be able to do more.
Imagineering Ethos in Action
Kyle Laughlin, SVP, Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development, recently shared about the droids and Imagineering, saying, “BDX is a great example of our ethos in action: story first, technology in service of that story. What’s new here is the level of responsiveness, physicality, and charm we can now achieve in real-time, guest-facing environments. It’s not a trick or a one-off moment — it’s an evolving character platform. And we’re just at the beginning.”
