The Sound of Music 60th Anniversary

Restored and Remastered ‘The Sound of Music’ Heading to Theaters for 60th Anniversary

March 2, 2025, marks the 60th anniversary since the hills first came to life with The Sound of Music. Since then, the Rodgers & Hammerstein film has become a legendary and iconic movie musical beloved by generations. As part of the 60th anniversary of the film, it has been restored and remastered and fans of all ages will get to experience the beautiful sights and sing-along sounds of this classic film in 4K image resolution. The Sound of Music will be released in theaters, then on physical media, and other celebratory events will be happening worldwide this year.

The Walt Disney Film Restoration team did the restoration. The process took 9 months and involved digital scanning of preserved film footage along with expert clean-up efforts to correct any dirt, warping, or other issues that were encountered. “Our team is honored to care for and re-deliver this classic film to audiences around the world so they can enjoy it in all its originally intended visual and audio glory,” says Kevin Schaeffer, Director, Restoration & Library Management. The result of this restoration is that the 60th anniversary of The Sound of Music has both vibrant color and resounding music that will share the cinematic legacy anew for many generations to come.

“This enhanced version of The Sound of Music is a testament to the enduring power of this iconic masterpiece. As we enter the 60th year, the restoration will safeguard our beloved classic for generations to come,” says Imogen Lloyd Webber, who oversees the Rodgers & Hammerstein brand as EVP Marketing and Communications for Concord Theatricals and Originals.

“The Walt Disney Company couldn’t be a better partner to bring to life an amazing international celebration of The Sound of Music’s enduring and meaningful impact on culture,” adds Sophia Dilley, EVP of Concord Originals.

In The Sound of Music, Julie Andrews stars as Maria, a young woman with lots of spirit who leaves a convent to become a governess to the seven children of Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer). She wins over the family with her kindness, warmth, and songs. As war gets closer, Maria and the family must make a daring escape. The film won five Academy Awards and is one of the most successful movie musicals of time. The Sound of Music has memorable songs like Edelweiss, My Favorite Things, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, Do-Re-Me, and of course The Sound of Music as well.

The film will be arriving in theaters this year and then will be released on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray later in the year as well. More announcements about the theatrical and physical release of the film and other events surrounding the 60th anniversary will be announced at a later date.
