Captain America: Brave New World arrived in theaters on February 14, 2025. The newest flick in the Marvel Cinematic Universe earned $40 million during its opening day and the screenings the night before. It opened at 4,105 locations. With the current momentum of the first film with Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson as Captain America, it is expected that it will generate $90 million throughout the holiday weekend. This weekend is a 4-day weekend thanks to Presidents Day.
The success of the film is being watched closely. Last summer’s Deadpool & Wolverine earned over $1.3 billion at the global box office. The Marvels, which came out in 2023, was not nearly as successful. It actually lost money at the box office with its $206 million global earnings. With a production budget of $180 million (plus marketing costs), Captain America: Brave New World will need good word of mouth to make a profit.
At this point, the reviews for this newest Captain America film have been less than stellar. It has a Cinema Score rating of B-, which is the weakest for the franchise to date. The coming weeks will determine the success of this film and perhaps the fate of the franchise.
