On this day in 2009, the Chinese government approved the building of the Shanghai Disneyland Resort. The agreement followed ten years of talks between Disney and Chinese authorities. Shanghai Disneyland would be the fourth international Disney park and the first built in mainland China. Construction began in 2011 and the park opened in 2016. The original cost was estimated to be $3.66 billion, but it rose to $5.5 billion by opening day. [15 years ago in 2024]
