Disney has announced the theatrical release date for its upcoming live-action film, Lilo & Stitch. It will be arriving in theaters on May 23, 2025. This version of the film takes the animated film and utilizes live-action and CGI to tell the story of the loveable experiment 626 and his found family. The film is directed by Dean Fleischer Camp. He previously directed Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. The announcement was shared on social media today by a variety of Disney handles.
Lilo will be portrayed by Maia Kealoha and Nani will be played by Sydney Elizebeth Agudong. They will be joined by David Kawena as Kaipo Duidot, Courtney B. Vance as Cobra Bubbles, Billy Magnussen as Pleakley, Zach Galifianakis as Jumb, and Amy Hill will join as a new character named Tūtū. Perhaps most importantly, Chris Sanders will be returning to voice Stitch. He wrote the original film and also provided the voice for Experiment 626. Other returning cast members include Tia Carrere. She originally voiced Nani. This time she will be playing a new character named Mrs. Kekoa.
Recently, Chris Sanders shared his excitement with Collider about returning to this story and character. He said, “I like that the story and the characters have endured. It was my wish that the story and characters would have staying power, and I’m really glad that they have. I’ve never stopped doing the voice. I do it for all the different stage shows and parades and everything, and it’s nice to, several times a year, be able to revisit that character.”
This new version of Lilo & Stitch arrives in theaters on May 23, 2025. What do you think? Are you excited about it? Currently, the original animated feature can be watched on Disney+.
