On this day in 1928, the score was recorded for ‘Steamboat Willie,’ making it one of the first cartoons with synchronized sound and a post-produced soundtrack. This was a second attempt at the recording, since the first session on September 15 did not go well. The orchestra could not synchronize with the film. To solve the problem, Ub Iwerks matched an animated bouncing ball projected on the score with one added to the film! The session took just 3 hours.
