Inside Out 2 continues to be a powerhouse at the box office. For its second weekend in theaters, it brought in $100 million domestically and $164 million internationally. By the end of the weekend, the film has brought in $724.4 million at the box office. This makes it the most successful film of the year. Previously, Dune: Part Two held the distinction with its $711.1 million in ticket sales.
With the weekend’s performance, Inside Out 2 has the distinction of having the best second weekend for any animated feature. That isn’t all, however. It also has the seventh best second weekend for any movie. This puts it in company with movies like Avengers, Star Wars, and Jurassic World series. It also puts it ahead of last year’s Barbie, which brought in $93 million on its second weekend.
In North America, Inside Out 2 now has brought in $355.2 million. From the first week to the second week, it only fell 35%. This makes it the best hold for any film in history that has opened with over $150 million. Previously, Star Wars: The Force Awakens held that record with a 40% dip. Internationally, Inside Out 2 has brought in $369.4 million. This comes before it arrives in some major markets. The film only dropped 22% internationally from its first week to second week.
The success of Inside Out 2 is a welcome one for Disney and Pixar. It also could see the film joining the billion dollar club. For Pixar, it would join the likes of Finding Dory, Toy Story 3, Toy Story 4, and Incredibles 2.
Inside Out 2 continues the story of Riley, who first appeared in Inside Out, and the emotions in her head. Now 13 years old, she is a teenager and facing a new and bigger world. They are joined by Maya Hawke who voices Anxiety, Ayo Edebiri as Envy, Adèle Exarchopoulos as Ennui, Paul Walter Hauser as Embarrassment, and June Squibb as Nostalgia.
