Guests visiting Disney Springs and checking out the Disney Springs Art Walk can find a mural called Gullah Magic. This piece was painted by Marcella Swett recently and highlights the heritage of the Gullah people. This also happens to be a part of Swett’s story as well. The Gullah people are an African American ethnic group residing primarily in the Lowcountry region of the U.S. states of South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. They are known for their unique culture that has preserved a significant influence of Africanisms, setting them apart from other African American communities. The Gullah people descended from enslaved West Africans, particularly those brought to the region for rice cultivation. They traditionally speak the Gullah language, which is a creole language with roots in African and European languages. They have strong influences from West and Central African traditions in their arts, crafts, food, music, language, and storytelling. Some of these influences can be seen in Swett’s mural in Disney Springs. The Gullah people have a rich and resilient history, showcasing the enduring strength of their cultural identity.
