Production has begun on a new Star Trek movie that will be making its way to Paramount+. The new Star Trek: Section 31 movie stars Michelle Yeoh. Yeoh returns to once again star as Emperor Philippa Georgiou. This is a character she originated in the first season of Star Trek: Discovery. Formerly the emperor of the mirror universe, her character now works with the secretive Section 31 division of Starfleet. It’s task is to protect the United Federation of Planets. Now, however, she must also face the sins of her past. Along with announcing that the film had gone into production, StarTrek.com shared a picture of Michelle Yeoh from the first day of production.
More of the cast for Section 31 has also been revealed. Joining Yeoh is Omari Hardwick (Powers), Kacey Rohl (Hannibal), Emmy Award winner Sam Richardson (Ted Lasso), Sven Ruygrok (One Piece), Robert Kazinsky (Pacific Rim), Humberly Gonzalez (Ginny & Georgia), and James Hiroyuki Liao (Barry).
Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman said, “And we’re off to the races! Thrilled to report principal photography has started on Star Trek: Section 31. We welcome our incredible cast of new characters as they join our beloved Michelle Yeoh on her next wild adventure across the Trek universe.”
Yeoh shared when the project was shared previously, “I’m beyond thrilled to return to my Star Trek family and to the role I’ve loved for so long. Section 31 has been near and dear to my heart since I began the journey of playing Philippa all the way back when this new golden age of Star Trek launched. To see her finally get her moment is a dream come true in a year that’s shown me the incredible power of never giving up on your dreams. We can’t wait to share what’s in store for you, and until then: live long and prosper (unless Emperor Georgiou decrees otherwise)!”
Star Trek: Section 31 is written by Craig Sweeny and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. Alex Kurtzman, Craig Sweeny, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth and Michelle Yeoh are executive producers. The film is produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.
Originally this project was set to be a series. However, as things have evolved over time, the project was changed to a movie instead. This is presumably just the first Star Trek movie that will be made for Paramount+. However, with Paramount currently apparently up for sale, the future could be uncertain for all projects once a new owner potentially takes over. Only time will tell.
When it is finished, Star Trek: Section 31 will be streamed on Paramount+. A release date has not been announced. When it is, Daps Magic will provide those details.
