This week Paramount+ announced the cancellation of multiple shows, along with the removal of these shows from the streaming service. Among the shows that were canceled was the animate Star Trek series called Star Trek: Prodigy. The cancellation comes as the second season of the series is already in post production. The other series that were cancelled and will be removed are Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Queen of the Universe, and The Game.
Star Trek: Prodigy was about a ragtag crew of youngsters who came into possession of a Starfleet vessel named the Protostar. Aboard it, a hologram of Admiral Janeway helped guide these kids as they learned about becoming Starfleet officers, fly the ship, fight for survival, and also grow as friends and as individuals.
Originally, Star Trek: Prodigy had been renewed for a second season in November 2021. It was part of a push by Star Trek boss Alex Kurtzman to connect a younger generation with the world of Trek. The series is going to continue through post-production and then producers for CBS Studios plan to shop both seasons to a new buyer.
The move to remove to cancel and remove the series from Paramount+ follows a trend of several studios of late that are removing content for the tax write-offs. At this point, where Star Trek: Prodigy ends up is anybody’s guess. Daps Magic will continue to follow this story and provide updates as they become available.
