The honorary Oscar given to Walt Disney by Shirley Temple for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is temporarily on display at Carthay Circle at Disney California Adventure. The Oscar and seven miniature accompanying Oscars are on display in the entrance of the Disney replication of the theater where the movie premiered. This display is courtesy of The Walt Disney Family Museum and will be at Carthay Circle Restaurant until March 20, 2023.
The idea for the honorary Oscar is said to be that of Academy President and legendary filmmaker Frank Capra. Shirley Temple was chosen to give the Oscar to Walt Disney as she could stand in for the children of the world who were viewed as the audience for this film. Walt Disney disagreed that the film’s audience was only children and it was made for everyone. The Academy honored the film for being “a significant screen innovation which has charmed millions and pioneered a great new entertainment field for the motion picture cartoon.”
Elsewhere throughout the Disneyland Resort, there are other nods to the Oscars. There are some special treats to be found at Carthay Circle Restaurant and Award Wieners. There is also a photo op to commemorate the Academy Awards at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. The phot op will be in place through March 15, 2023.
The 95th Academy Awards are on Sunday March 12, 2023 on ABC. Tune in at 8:00 PM ET/5:00 PM PT . What do you think of these nods to the Oscars that are found at the Disneyland Resort?
