James Cameron Says More Avatar Movies Are On the Way as “Avatar: The Way of Water” Passes “Top Gun: Maverick” at the Box Office

This week Avatar: The Way of Water passed Top Gun: Maverick at the box office and became the top grossing movie of 2022. The film has now garnered over $1.5 billion at the box office. As the movie continues to make money, director James Cameron says there are more Avatar movies on the way.

Cameron shared in an interview with Chris Wallace that he would be moving forward with future films in the franchise.

“It looks like just with the momentum that the film has now that will easily pass our break even in the next few days, so it looks like I can’t wiggle out of this, I’m gonna have to do these other sequels,” Cameron said. “I know what I’m going to be doing the next six or seven years. The point is we’re going to be okay. I’m sure that we’ll have a discussion soon with with the top folks at Disney about the game plan going forward for Avatar 3, which is already in the can – we’ve already captured and photographed the whole film so we’re in extended post-production to do all that CG magic. And then Avatar 4 and 5 are both written. We even have some of 4 in the can. We’ve begun a franchise at this point. We’ve begun a saga that can now play out over multiple films.”

The update from Cameron comes after he said in a recent interview that Avatar: The Way of Water would have to be one of the most successful movies of all time just to break even. This appears to have been an exaggeration. The film continues to have momentum and be winning at the box office. It is expected to win once again this weekend as well. At this point, the next Avatar movie should be arriving in theaters in December 2024.

The full interview can be seen on this week’s episode of Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? The program can be found on HBO Max and also on CNN. New episodes from on Fridays in HBO Mad and air on CNN on Sunday evenings at 7:00 PM ET.
