National Treasure 3 Script Headed to Nicolas Cage

For years fans have wondered if there would be a third National Treasure movie. Now it seems like there is a decent chance that this could be the case. In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that there is a script for a National Treasure 3 and the next step will be to see if Nicolas Cage likes it and wants to return as Benjamin Franklin Gates.

According to Bruckheimer, “Let’s hope we’re working on the script right now. Hopefully [Cage] likes it, but it’s really good. So I think we’ll get it to him shortly.”

This confirmation is a bit of a departure from what many thought what would happen with the franchise with the upcoming Disney+ series on the way. Even Nicolas Cage himself seemed to think the chances of another movie were slim. In an AMA on Reddit in April, Cage answered a question about the prospects of another National Treasure movie,  “No, the priority was to turn it into a TV show so I would say probably not.” Now, just four months later, it seems like things have changed a bit.

In another interview with GQ, Cage shared his skepticism about National Treasure 3 happening after the lackluster results of some of his other movies. In the interview he said, “The phone stopped ringing. It was like,’What do you mean we’re not doing National Treasure 3? It’s been 14 years, why not. Well, Sorcerer’s Apprentice didn’t work, and Ghost Rider didn’t really sell tickets. And Drive Angry just came and went.”

If Jerry Bruckheimer gets his way, all of these assumptions by Cage could be negated and a third movie could indeed happen. It won’t be the only new National Treasure offering to be found. The Disney+ series, National Treasure: Edge of History, will also be available, potentially even with Nicolas Cage in that outing as well. “We’re going to beg and plead and whatever,” co-creator Marianne Wibberley told Deadline. “We’ll have him in two seconds. He’s our favorite actor out of everyone. We pitched him as Ben Gates before he was Ben Gates. He was our first choice.”

If Cage were to join the series, he would not be the first National Treasure movie alumni to join. He would be joining fellow cast members Justin Bartha as Riley Poole and Harvey Keitel as Peter Sadusky from the movies in the series.

What do you think of a third National Treasure movie being made? Would you want to watch it? Is it a good idea? What do you think would be the treasure that would be sought in it? Share your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
