The price of an ESPN+ subscription is about to go up. Starting on August 23, 2022, the price will go from $6.99 up to $9.99. This is a 43% increase. The annual subscription price will climb from $69.99 to $99.99.
The price increase of ESPN+ comes after Disney negotiated a deal to continue to broadcast Monday Night Football. This costs Disney $2.6 billion per year. Part of the deal allows for Disney to simulcast Monday Night Football on ESPN+. The streaming service also includes live National Football League games, exclusive Grand Slam tennis matches from Wimbledon and the Australian Open, PGA Tour events, and National Hockey League games.
The price increase comes as the streaming service continues to operate at a loss for Disney. This should help boost revenue for the sports streaming service. This price increase should also make the Disney Bundle look more attractive as that price is not increasing at this time. It is offered for $13.99 per and includes Disney+, the ad-supported Hulu, and also ESPN+.
Pushing the Disney Bundle should help Disney+ reach its goal of having 230 million to 260 million subscribers by the end of 2024. At the end of the last quarter, Disney had 137.7 million subscribers for Disney+ globally and 22.3 million ESPN+ subscribers. Hitting the goal for Disney+ subscribers is a top priority for Disney CEO Bob Chapek.
