Disney continues to add more and more content to its streaming service, Disney+. Bloomberg is reporting that it also wants to add one of the most well-known sci-fi titles to its lineup. The report says that Disney is in the very “early stages” of negotiations with the British Broadcasting Corporation to bring Doctor Who to Disney+.
If it were to happen, the streaming service would pick up the new Doctor Who series that is set to be arriving on screens sometime in 2023. This will also include a new person in the title role. It was recently announced that Ncuti Gatwa has been cast as the 14th doctor. The deal would not include earlier Doctor Who seasons as they are currently airing on HBO Max.
Doctor Who originally began airing in 1963. It saw itself revived in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston in the title role. It also would not include the recent series that includes Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor. Her final episode will air later this year and she will pass the TARDIS on to Ncuti Gatwa.
Ncuti Gatwa is a Scottish actor who was born in Rwanda. He is most well known for his role in Sex Education on Netflix as the iconic Eric Effiong. He was awarded Best Actor Award at the Scottish BAFTA’s in 2020 as well as numerous nominations including Best Male Performance in a comedy program at this year’s BAFTA’s for this role.
At this time, it is unknown if the discussions between Disney and BBC will lead to a deal. However, this would add a well-known franchise that could bring more subscribers to Disney’s streaming service as it continues to strive to reach 230 million to 260 million Disney+ subscribers by 2024.
