Today Disney announced that it was releasing a line of cloth face masks. These facemasks feature Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars characters on them. Profits from these masks in the U.S. will be donated to MedShare, up to $1 million Disney also announced. The arrival of these face masks comes after the CDC recommended wearing them in public settings. The face masks are available for pre-order here on shopdisney.com.
“We realize this is a challenging time for families and wearing any type of mask can be daunting,” says Edward Park, senior vice president, Disney store and shopDisney. “Our hope is that Disney’s cloth face masks featuring some of our most beloved characters will provide comfort to the families, fans and communities that are so important to us.”
Disney is also donating 1 million of these masks to children and families in communities that are underserved. This is being done through a partnership with MedShare. This organization collects and distributes surplus medical supplies. It is based in Atlanta. Disney will also be donating all profits from the facemasks, up to $1 million, between now and September 30, 2020.
“Disney’s donations will make a tremendous impact in the communities we serve,” says Charles Redding, CEO and president of MedShare. “Their contribution of one million Disney cloth face masks will be provided to families in underserved communities and organizations working to limit the spread of COVID-19, while their monetary donation will be used to support the medical community’s ongoing efforts to provide lifesaving care to those who need it most.”
The face masks will be available in small, medium, and large sizes. They will also be available in multiple different designs that will feature Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, Anna and Elsa, Woody and Buzz Lightyear, The Avengers, the Child (Baby Yoda), and more. According to Disney, the “cloth face masks align with the FDA’s latest recommendations on non-surgical, non-industrial grade face masks.”
“Although social distancing remains one of the most effective measures to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the CDC also recommends that the general public use simple cloth face coverings if out in public,” said Dr. Pat Salber, Editor-in-Chief of The Doctor Weighs In and member of Medshare’s Board of Trustees. “Disney’s cloth face masks can help families apply that recommendation while helping kids feel less scared and more comfortable.”
The face masks are currently available for pre-order on shopdisney.com. They are currently scheduled to be shipped sometime in June. The cloth face masks come in packs of four. They also include care instructions, including how to wash them and fitting guidelines.
Disney has been actively reaching out and helping communities throughout this coronavirus pandemic. Disney has also donated 100,000 N95 masks to the states of New York, California, Florida, and Washington, D.C., along with 175,000 rain ponchos to hospitals in need of additional protective garments. To date, Disney has donated nearly $5 million in-kind donations to benefit communities impacted by the healthcare crisis.
