Disney’s live-action version of Aladdin had a solid opening weekend of $112.7 million this weekend domestically. This exceeded expectations which had the movie projected to hit the $75-$85 million for the weekend.
The movie, directed by Guy Ritchie, stars Will Smith as the Genie, Mena Massoud in the title role, and Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine. The movie has had some mixed reaction as some fans compare it to the 1992 animated original. This movie comes ahead of Guy Favreau’s retelling of The Lion King later this summer and follows a live-action retelling of Dumbo. Dumbo wasn’t a super strong performer in the box office but The Lion King is expected to be quite popular.
Internationally, Aladdin made $121 million at the box office across 54 territories. $18.7 million of the box office sales came from China, with Mexico’s box office at $9.2 million, and Canada with $8.4 million.
