Incredibles 2: A Sequel Worth the Wait (Spoiler Free Review)

14 years is a long time to wait. That’s how long we have waited for a sequel to Disney Pixar’s The Incredibles! I recently attended an advanced screening and couldn’t wait to share my thoughts! While The Incredibles isn’t my all-time favorite Pixar film, it really is a great movie. To say I was excited about the sequel is a bit of an understatement. Heck, we even created a recipe for the movie on Geeks Who Eat! After all, 14 years is a really long time to wait!

“Everyone’s favorite family of superheroes is back in “Incredibles 2”–but this time Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is in the spotlight, leaving Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell) and Dash (voice of Huck Milner) to navigate the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life. It’s a tough transition for everyone, made tougher by the fact that the family is still unaware of baby Jack-Jack’s emerging superpowers. When a new villain hatches a brilliant and dangerous plot, the family and Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) must find a way to work together again–which is easier said than done, even when they’re all Incredible.”

The Movie

As you would expect from Pixar, the animation in Incredibles 2 is stunning. The world building they have done in the film is perfect. Everything from the hotel the Parrs stay in, to their new home. Everything is perfection! If you thought the visuals of the first movie were jaw-dropping, just wait until you see this one.

The story of Incredibles 2 is a ton of fun. I won’t get into too much detail due to keeping this spoiler free, but I will say I really enjoyed what they did with it. Having Elastigirl front and center feels right and was done well. While kids will definitely enjoy this movie, it really feels like the story does cater more towards older fans. The story is a lot more humorous when you have experienced adulthood.

The Voice Actors

With few exceptions, most of the original cast returned to voice their characters. Surprisingly, even the voice of Jack-Jack is the same as in the original movie. Dash’s replacement does well and to be honest I didn’t notice much difference. Edna Mode is of course fantastic. My only gripe with the movie is that there wasn’t more of her character in the film. However, it is Jack-Jack who completely steals the show.

My favorite addition to the cast is Bob Odenkirk, the voice of Winston Deavor. While his typical work is far more adult with shows like Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, he is a great addition to the film and I hope to see him do more voice work. Catherine Keener also joins the cast as Evelyn Deavor.

The Score

Michael Giacchino returns with a new mod inspired score for Incredibles 2. Though to be fair, I wouldn’t expect anyone else. Giacchino’s work on the first film set the tone perfectly and is no different here.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Incredibles 2 is a really fantastic follow up to the original. It is different enough to not feel like a simple rehash on the original. It is sure to become a fan favorite whether you remember seeing the original in the theater or are new to the franchise. I definitely recommend seeing it as soon as possible!
