A substantial expansion is in the works for the Tokyo Disney Resort. According to a press release shared by Mainichi News, this could be a new theme park or park expansion that would have a Japanese theme. This new expansion would not start construction until 2025. It would feature new and different attractions and characters that would fit within the theme that is being created. As of now, there is $2.7 billion being invested into this project. More details are expected to come in May of 2018.
An expansion would make sense for the Tokyo Disney Resort. For many fans, the Tokyo Disney Resort is one of the best in the world. Tokyo DisneySea is often hailed as the most incredible Disney park to experience by fans who have visited. The Tokyo Disney Resort is run by the Oriental Land Company. It was the first Disney theme park to be built outside of the United States and is the only theme park not owned and operated by The Walt Disney Company.
Disney has had varied results with local themes. Disney California Adventure recently underwent a massive re-imagining after the first concept for it never quite hit home with guests. Shanghai Disney, which is a Disney magic kingdom style park with a very Chinese approach has been hailed as incredibly successful. With ten years to begin planning until construction begins, it can be assumed that Walt Disney Imagineering will have a lot of time to learn from what worked and didn’t work in previous projects. There is a lot of potential for new versions of current attractions and completely new attractions to be created for a new Disney theme park in Tokyo as well.
What do you think of the news of a potential third gate at the Tokyo Disney Resort? Should it be a completely new park or just an expansion of an existing one? What would you like to see it be like? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
