Groot - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, An Out Of This World Look at Family – A Review by Caitie Bear

This week, everyone’s favorite group of galaxy-protectors returned to the theater for Volume 2 of the beloved franchise. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2  comes 3 years after the original. The story focuses primarily on Star-Lord and his father he has always longed to know who comes back into his life.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2Quality

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 carries over many of the same elements that fans loved from the first film. It has the stunning space visuals and fun music from the newest edition of Peter Quill’s Awesome Mix. With sequels, the problem becomes comparison to the first film, and unfortunately, this doesn’t hold up to the quality of its predecessor. This isn’t to say it’s a bad film by any means, but the first edition of Guardians of the Galaxy set an incredibly high bar that simply wasn’t replicated a second time.

Storytelling

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, much like the first movie, uses humor to carry the film. While the first film did this seemingly effortlessly, this felt like it was much more work. It also relied more on movie-long gimmicks. It did still carry the same charm and had the audience laughing, just not as frequently or effectively as the first film. The pacing of the film also suffers from the movie trying to follow too many storylines at once. Sadly this leaves the more minor storylines losing much of their depth and meaning in the process.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was a fun theater experience, especially as the audience reacted to all the twists and turns. While it was a fun movie in theaters, I’m greatly looking forward to getting to watch this in a home setting so I can attempt to unravel all the details that lay inside this movie. And although I was critical, it was only because the first Guardians of the Galaxy set such high expectations for myself as an audience member. This one didn’t necessarily live up to the standards I had for it. However, it is an incredibly fun movie experience! You should definitely grab a friend and see it once (or twice)!
