Sherlock Season 4 to Film in 2015

Sherlock - Moriarty - Miss Me?Sherlock fans have a little bit longer to wait until the next season (or series as they say in the UK) is released for the show. However, the light is now on at the end of the tunnel. On the BBC One facebook page this morning it was announced that starting in January, Sherlock will be filming again.

Co-creator, writer, and executive producer Steven Moffat shared about Sherlock Season 4 saying it will be, “A special, plus a new series of three episodes — it’s a record-breaking run! Of course, it’s far too early to say what’s coming, but we’re reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and John (Martin Freeman), is the very last thing you’d expect…”

“Series Four! At last! It’s always special to return to ‘Sherlock’ but this time it’s even more special as we’re doing… a Special! Not onlythat, we’ll then be shooting three more episodes which will take Sherlock and John Watson into deeper and darker water than ever before. The whole ‘Sherlock’ team are terrifically excited to return for four new adventures. The Game is on — again!” added Mark Gatiss who also is a co-creator, writer, and executive producer.

Here is the Facebook announcement:

We can confirm that #Sherlock will return to BBC One for a Special, followed by a series of three new episodes.

After the briefest of exiles, Sherlock came back only to face one of his biggest mysteries yet. Why is Moriarty’s face being broadcast on every television in the land?

Shooting on the special will begin in January 2015, with the series shooting later next year.

The Game is on – again!

While there is still at least another year and a half before Sherlock returns to television, it can be guessed that images from the season will begin to be shared in January (if the last go ’round is any indication). Currently, it is unknown when exactly the season or the special will be released on BBC One in the UK or PBS here in the United States. I would personally be guessing the end of 2015 or beginning of 2015 though.

Sherlock and Watson - Sherlock - BBC

So what do you think?

Sherlock - WatsonThe ending of each season of Sherlock is always a terrific tease. It draws the viewer in to an adventure that hasn’t even happened yet. The two year wait is excruciating to say the least. The beginning of the last season really tapped into the speculation and anticipation of the fans in a very clever way. It will be really interesting to see where this next season goes.

Colonel Sebastian Moran

Has Moriarty returned? If so, how central is he to the season? Or is this just really good video work by a new madman who wants to use Moriarty’s likeness for their own agenda. If you have read the Sherlock Holmes books, you know that Moriarty’s lieutenant Colonel Sebastian Moran returns after his death to exact revenge upon Sherlock. Could it be Colonel Moran? Only time will tell… which is always the motto for Sherlock speculation…

Mary Watson

Another possible plot point that could be addressed in this season is the death of Dr. John Watson’s wife Mary. In the books she actually dies of natural causes between The Reichenbach Fall and The Empty House. These stories obviously happened before Watson married her in this telling of Sherlock Holmes’ life but this does not discount the possibility of her death. Martin Freeman has admitted that her death is inevitably going to happen at some point… but at what point will that happen?

The wonderful thing about this show is that while it does take cues from the original stories, it also moves way beyond them. There will be many predictions about this next season before it is released but fans will still be surprised upon watching the next season of Sherlock… which is why I enjoy it so much.

What do you think? Are you excited for Sherlock Season 4? What are YOUR predictions?

Make it a GREAT day!
