Simba Remains King of Box Office with Lion King 3D

The Lion King 3D PosterThe Lion King has retained the top spot in the box office race for the second weekend in a row. This week, The Lion King 3D held off Brad Pitt’s Moneyball. According to the Associated Press, The Lion King 3D brought in $22.1 million this weekend. It has now generated more than $61.7 million since being re-released in 3D last weekend.

The original run of The Lion King brought in $800 million between it’s original run and 2002 re-release.  David Hollis, Disney’s head of distribution has said that due to the success of this release, it will remain on the big screen longer than the originally planned 2 week run. It hasn’t been decided how much longer it will remain on screen however.

The Lion King will also be released on Disney Blu-Ray in 3D and also Blu-Ray/DVD on October 4, 2011
