If you guys want to gather into this
0:14
front area, we can do a quick tour and
0:16
then at the end you can explore a little
0:18
bit on your own.
0:22
Hi, welcome.
0:28
Hello. Hello. Everybody wants to keep
0:30
coming in this way.
0:39
Do you guys want to take one more step
0:40
towards you? I think that's just about
0:42
everybody.
0:43
Oh my gosh, you guys are a big and
0:45
beautiful group.
0:54
Still coming in.
0:59
Sorry, we're a little bit of tight
1:00
quarters. We have a little bit more room
1:01
to spread out once we leave our front
1:03
area.
1:05
Oh, all right. Looks like our door is
1:07
closing. Okay. Hello everyone. Uh,
1:09
welcome to the Walt Disney Archives
1:11
presents uh, Charting the Course. This
1:14
is Disney Global Stories and
1:15
Inspirations. Um, so with the overall
1:17
theme of the event being Disney Worlds,
1:20
we were trying to think of how do we
1:21
create something that kind of goes with
1:23
that theming. Uh, and this is what we
1:25
started with. So here we enter into the
1:28
research phase of any Disney uh project.
1:30
So we use two different case studies to
1:32
illustrate that. Uh over in that first
1:34
section there you'll see uh black and
1:37
white photos from Walton Elupo's trip in
1:39
1941 to South America. Um and these were
1:42
all the reference items that were used
1:44
to create three caviaros as well as
1:45
saludas amigos. We also wanted to then
1:48
bring a more modern example into the
1:50
fold. So here we have some of the
1:52
imaginary research trips throughout Asia
1:54
and Africa that resulted in uh Disney's
1:57
Animal Kingdom. Um so we of course have
1:59
lots of photography here. So this is
2:01
where really this project starts, right?
2:03
Because whenever you're thinking about
2:04
any Disney project, whether it's
2:06
animation, live action, or theme parks,
2:09
you want to add that authenticity,
2:10
especially if you're recreating nature
2:12
or something that exists in the real
2:14
world. You want it to feel authentic.
2:16
You want it to feel real. So you really
2:17
suspend disbelief when you're watching
2:19
the project or being immersed in the
2:21
project. So that's why this research is
2:23
so important. So we started with our
2:25
photography here that really sets our
2:27
inspiration up. Then we turn to the
2:29
other side of the room and we see these
2:32
research pictures kind of start becoming
2:34
concepts. So we have over here some
2:36
artists such as Mary Blair and Lee Blair
2:39
um kind of creating as they're on the
2:41
site. Um and then their illustrations
2:43
come to life a little bit. And similarly
2:45
over here with Joe Roie, we have some of
2:47
his sketches as well as in this case we
2:49
have his sketchbook and also a pair of
2:51
boots that he wore on many of his
2:53
exhibitions um including for Disney
2:56
Animal Kingdom for Alani and also
2:58
Pleasure Island. So now that we've
3:00
reached the concept stage where lots
3:02
were inspired, but let's get a little
3:04
deeper into concept if you want to head
3:06
into our next area.
3:33
[Music]
3:36
All right. So, we're now entering the
3:38
concept area. So, we created this large
3:40
wall here that really brings the the
3:42
excitement of all these inspirations to
3:44
life.
3:48
Come on in. Come on in.
3:58
We're just about all over.
4:01
So sorry.
4:08
All right. So, like I said, we're now in
4:11
the concept phase. We have our
4:12
inspirations. We're starting to get a
4:14
little more formal with our designs to
4:16
really work toward making our project.
4:18
So, over here, you'll see four really
4:20
exquisite pieces of original artwork. Uh
4:22
we have that first piece is done by Mary
4:24
Blair, and that was done for uh three
4:27
caviaros. The second piece we have is
4:30
from Swiss Family Robinson. The third
4:33
piece is from 20,000 less under the sea.
4:35
There's that beautiful underwater
4:36
seascape. And then finally we have a
4:39
more recent piece. This is from Maka,
4:41
but this is actually a really
4:42
interesting piece because it was created
4:44
for inspiration. So the director was
4:46
trying to get to create this film. So he
4:50
commissioned an artist to create some
4:52
pieces that would kind of serve as
4:53
inspiration when creating the film. So
4:55
we have this lovely piece here. Um so
4:58
from there we get into our model making
5:00
phase. Um and then we get into our
5:02
global explosion essentially. But I'd
5:04
love to turn your attention to this
5:06
model here. I'm not sure if any of you
5:08
came to Epcot between 1999 and 2001, but
5:11
there was something called the
5:12
Millennium Celebration. Um, you might
5:14
have noticed these lovely puppets on
5:16
either side of us. These were puppets
5:18
from the Tapestry of Nations parade. Um,
5:20
and if you're anything like me, it's one
5:22
of my childhood core memories. It's one
5:24
of the most fantastic parades I've ever
5:25
seen. And these were puppets that were
5:27
worn on harness by performers. So, they
5:29
actually were quite a few feet taller
5:31
and they would go around World Showcase.
5:33
Um as also part of that celebration we
5:36
have the Millennium Village. So this was
5:38
between the Canada and the UK pavilion.
5:41
Um and this was actually a village that
5:43
existed that had different countries
5:45
with different activations. There were
5:47
different um experiences you could go
5:49
through. There was a theater, there was
5:51
a cafe, there was also artisans that
5:53
were creating different pieces as well
5:54
that you could purchase. So this is a
5:56
really cool model that we love to
5:58
display here.
6:00
So, now we've got our concepts down and
6:02
we're ready for our global celebration,
6:04
which brings us to the last part of our
6:06
room where there's more of our finalized
6:08
pieces.
6:13
So, as we're working our way this way,
6:15
we try to break it up a little bit
6:17
geographically. So, over in this corner,
6:19
we have Africa. Then, we transition here
6:22
into South America. We have a little bit
6:24
of Europe with our models and our angel
6:26
here. and then Asia. In this corner, um
6:29
I'd love to start over in this corner of
6:32
Asia if you don't mind coming over this
6:34
way or coming to excuse me.
6:38
We have a few pieces that celebrate the
6:40
Lion King. We have some Mikett from the
6:43
animated film. And then we have this
6:45
really stunning model of Pride Rock from
6:47
the live action film.
6:50
Um one last piece that you might
6:52
recognize in our Africa section. Here we
6:55
have Little Red. This was elephant that
6:57
was used at the finale scene of Kiljaro
6:59
Safaris uh when the attraction first
7:01
opened.
7:03
She's she's one of my favorites. Big big
7:05
big red fan or big little red band. Um
7:08
so then we move into South America and
7:10
we have some pieces from the live action
7:12
film The Jungle Cruise. We have costumes
7:15
that were worn by Dwayne the Rock
7:16
Johnson here as well as Emily Blunt and
7:18
the lovely frog arrowhead necklace.
7:22
Here we have the map to the tears of the
7:24
moon as well as some of the pieces that
7:26
are inside the book on display.
7:29
And finally, a sign here from N's River.
7:34
Now, we're heading into Europe and you
7:36
see these really beautiful models here
7:38
on these two tables. This one here is
7:40
Germany, of course, and this is from um
7:43
before the park opened, so it's a pretty
7:44
early model. And then behind us is a
7:47
model of the state church from Norway.
7:49
You can see a beautiful
8:00
But my favorite piece actually from the
8:02
Europe section is that gold angel. Um
8:05
she's a little bit tiny, but what's
8:07
really spectacular about her is she's
8:08
our newest acquisition in the welcome
8:10
archive. If you've gone to the Italy
8:12
pavilion, that first tower of adventure,
8:15
there's actually a very small angel
8:17
statue on the top. you may not have even
8:19
noticed. She actually was recently
8:22
removed by WDI and they've replaced her.
8:24
So, now she is in our collection. So,
8:26
we're so excited to have her and it's
8:28
definitely the closest you'll ever be
8:30
able to get to this statue cuz usually
8:32
way up high. Um, and then finally, let's
8:35
turn our attention to the other corner
8:39
where we move into Asia.
8:42
So, we of course have Mulan's lovely
8:45
costume here from the live action Mulan.
8:48
Along with that, in this case, we have
8:50
the sword that was gifted to her by the
8:51
emperor. Both the sword, the sheep, as
8:54
well as the case were all custom made.
8:57
So, really spectacular detail. If you
8:59
get a chance to get up close, really
9:00
take that in. And then we have some
9:02
models up front. Uh this is a Singapore
9:05
village from Pirates of the Caribbean at
9:07
World's End. What else is cool about
9:09
this model is if you look at these first
9:11
three buildings, they're actually the
9:13
same building, but it's in different
9:14
phases of the process of creating the
9:16
model. So once again, if you get a
9:18
chance, please get close, take in those
9:21
beautiful details.
9:23
That pretty much brings us to the end of
9:24
our tour. Like I said, feel free take a
9:27
look around. Um, if you have any
9:29
questions, I'll be here. Feel free to
9:31
let me know. Thank you guys so much for
9:33
coming by.
9:35
Thank you.
9:42
We did it.
9:56
What's wrong?
10:17
