Dearest friends in Dastardly, please welcome our host from Challenge Accepted, Michelle Kare.
7:08
[Music]
7:19
23. Wasn't that performance incredible?
7:25
Wow. I pretty much died and selfasticated myself after that. It was amazing. Well, my name is Michelle Har
7:34
and you may know me from my show challenge accepted. But today I am thrilled to accept the challenge of
7:40
hosting this panel, Disney villains, icons of people. And we have so many
7:47
projects around the world to talk about this morning. But we can't talk about
7:52
villains without mentioning villains coming to magic.
7:58
[Applause]
8:05
But we can give a sneak peek at some of the biggest in development right now at
8:10
Walt Disney.
8:17
This is and as a supervising animator for Disney animation studios I have
8:23
created classic such as Gastron Jafar and Scar for the night. Well, my Disney
8:30
story begins in Germany where it really started when I saw people for the first
8:35
time. when I was 11 years old. Changed my life and I wanted to do that period
8:42
when I cast on. So that was my first villain and it was Ron and John again who mermaid they were doing Aladdin. So
8:49
I ended up doing Jafar and by the time it got to Lion King which was a project
8:55
I said I know it's the picture trying to do them but I think I can do something with star and then that
9:02
looked at me and said well I had you in mind. So that was film number three. People ask me sometimes is there a
9:08
certain person that is based on that you based on and then all I can say is the
9:14
LA James
9:20
good you know that's the guy and when it came to Jafar I remember
9:27
getting out of the voice Jonathan Freeman the voice actor and he had this beautiful voice quality and I mentioned
9:34
what you usually try when you start about my character walk and the way you walk the character tells you a little
9:40
bit about him on her body. He just swishes in and swishes out and these are
9:46
things you know he just uh shows up. There's not a lot of bounce or great
9:53
that way. So once I applied that it was actually easy for me to have a move and
9:59
then when it came to star again the voice helped me go on journey lines he
10:04
can read the full movie star was that was my first moment I was
10:09
so used to doing human characters and you know using a mirror and acting things out in front of the mirror you
10:14
know in public and out of it I got out of my chair closed the door I was going to act this out and I thought no it's
10:22
not going work on this character and it was back to using wildlife revising how
10:28
lions walk and how to get away that that doesn't mean that occasionally you can also do some human acting. I remember
10:36
one scene I particularly enjoyed was the star talks about the relationship
10:41
between Simba and Mufasa and he calls it a father son thing like he doesn't like
10:48
he's disgusted by it and so I thought I need to do think I need to do something human here so you can do that but you
10:56
have to be sure that this doesn't look like hand then it still looks like or doing something. So these are interesting
11:03
challenges that come about. How does it feel to be returning? It's a little bit like known territory
11:10
to get back to villains because I've lived these bad guys for so long and studied them my life. So it's familiar
11:17
turf for me and uh I just love the idea to have an area where you just have fun
11:24
with them all in one one area. get to know the new Martin. I know we're going to amplify the way we see them like
11:31
we've never seen them before. It's going to be dramatic with amazing lighting. It's been really fun. I worked with some
11:38
of the guys at Engineering and uh yeah, we'll build on stuff. But it's definitely when I read this for the
11:44
first time, he said, "This is an idea. It's kind of fun." And then I had the phone call and said, "Yeah, you got
11:50
something else. Would you like to be part of this piece?" And what excites you the most about stacking the two of
11:57
them? Was the idea that it's a whole new land, you know, where you can bring these guys
12:03
and see on Mark's 8th birthday. I gave him a sketch of Japan
12:10
and I got a nice chest being the sketches from there. So the
12:17
interaction fun too. [Applause]
12:25
Now, here to tell us more, please welcome the Walt Disney Imaginary White
12:30
Winter and Caroline May. [Music]
12:37
[Applause] [Music]
12:50
So, this is exciting. I don't know if you guys heard backstage how loud everyone is out here, but
12:57
there's a lot of excitement because it was just one year ago that Josh Maro first announced villains at Magic.
13:05
Yes. And since then, the Imagineers have been bringing the vision of villains to life along with Andreas Dejan.
13:12
And that's hoping you guys can tell us more about today. In the video we just saw, talked about the rich source
13:19
materials, the Disney villains. So I'd like to first ask you guys where do we start when you're taking something from
13:25
animation to real life in the parks? So we start with the known. We start with
13:31
the classic animated films which give us these amazing settings and we want to deliver on a certain amount of wish
13:37
fulfillment so that it feels like you are stepping into these worlds. But we don't just want to deliver on the known.
13:44
But we also want to deliver on what is new and familiar. And in order to do that, we have to have a deep
13:49
understanding of these characters, the look and the feel, and how to translate that into the architecture and the
13:56
place. And so what we look at in the characters and the shape language is that they have a fluidity to them,
14:03
especially when we think about the magic that's associated with them. And so this is very reminiscent of the architectural
14:10
style of art nu. So you finding the architectural inspiration. What is step two?
14:18
So step two is a lot of research. So we would books and uh the movies obviously
14:24
as well characters but it'll only take you so far and kind of grander tradition
14:30
and we thought research trip was in order to see person. I've heard a lot about these research.
14:36
They sound really really fun. Um I thought where did you guys go?
14:42
So this year took an amazing trip to Paris, France, and Barcelona, Spain,
14:47
which were both iconic homes of art. What did you learn on this research
14:52
trip? Because if it was me, I'd probably be eating for a lot of baguettes and great food. But please tell us what to
15:00
brought in the experts. We toured with local art historians, architectural historians, university professors. You
15:07
know, most of the team at least had a foundation in art history and art nuvo,
15:12
but we wanted to see examples of architecture where it looked like nature
15:17
a spell had been cast on nature where trees and vines twist into stone and
15:24
that's super interesting to me and I'm sure super as well because you're taking
15:29
something from real life and finding magical inspiration and
15:34
from. So you went to both Paris and Barcelona. What are the differences in
15:39
these two cities inspiration? Yeah. So Paris is what you think of
15:45
classic art nuo. It really plays into natural motif swirling designs that look
15:51
like nature's curse. In Barcelona, the art style is actually referred to as
15:56
modernism. So think gouty architecture that is otherworldly. It's almost unnerving when you're these faces and
16:04
you even get buildings that look like they're melting with these subliminal shapes of faces in them.
16:09
Well, we all know imagineers are very good at hiding very specific face. So,
16:15
that's awesome. Um, and I just have to say I mean these reference images are so
16:20
striking because of the color palette. Yeah, the colors play a huge part in both the architecture and obviously the
16:26
villains themselves. They have such iconic color palettes and looks to them. You can tell what art just from that.
16:34
Um, and so really pulling that together and how to combine that with our
16:39
Yeah. So when you take all of these elements, right, the look and feel of the characters and the magic, the art
16:44
nuvo as this architectural style that looks like a spell has been cast on it and then this rich jeweled color palette
16:52
that Wyatt just mentioned, you end up getting all of the ingredients of what we've been calling conjured
16:57
architecture. Conjured architecture. So this is
17:03
that that you guys some point. Yeah. Something that our team came up with and we tried to think something different but familiar.
17:10
That's amazing. I I love that. Um, you know, again, you're blending this historical reference with the
17:18
fantastical source material. That's amazing. Yeah. So, we're excited today to really
17:23
show you everything about here. We have a few more tricks up our sleeves beyond just condo architecture that we're going
17:28
to save for a later date to talk more about this, but we're just excited to give you a little sneak peek into what
17:33
the team has been working on so far. Well, as said, that's very tangalizing and I personally really look forward to
17:40
experiencing conjured architecture with villains at Magic Kingdom. Thank you guys so much for coming out. This is
17:46
awesome. [Music]
17:57
Well, let's transition from a tantalizing book to the future to a look at how guests around the world can now
18:04
interact with Disney villains right now. So, please welcome from Disney Live Entertainment, Mark Renfro, and from
18:11
Disney Signature Experiences, Denise K.
18:22
[Music]
18:31
It's delightfully wicked to be here. If I can see you,
18:38
this chair is so dramatic. We love him. I need this for my office.
18:46
I think we know make that happen. Um, so thank you so much for being here. We know that
18:53
entertainment is for so many Disney guests to interact with these Disney buildings in person and I would love to
19:00
start talking about how you and your teams make that possible to look at the Disney parks as well as Disney.
19:08
Yeah. Well, as many of you know, it's already
19:13
Halloween season here at Walt Disney World. That's right. Oh, yes. Intimate. I know
19:20
it intimately. And it's also happening at the uh Disneyland Resort. Yes. They
19:27
too have already started celebrating the villain's favorite holiday, Halloween.
19:32
And we all know Bash. Yeah. Uh let me tell you a little bit about
19:39
it. It's pretty amazing. So, uh taking place on select nights at Disney California Adventure Park. My Disney
19:45
colleagues have been having way too much fun brewing up all kinds of thrilling
19:51
entertainment, including the villains grove and a frightfully fun parade. And
19:59
this year, new love, one of our my favorite villains from Incredibles,
20:07
Syndrome. Yeah. So, you can you can be Syndrome. By the way, I was hoping to see a
20:13
picture cuz he used to have my hair do. Um, so, uh, you can beat Syndrome, get
20:20
your candy fixed on, and enjoy all kinds of tricks and yummy treats at the
20:25
OogieOogie bench. Well, that's very fabulous. And I haven't personally seen Marvin Syndrome
20:31
in the same room. So, you never know. And while apart from history villains,
20:38
having worked on specifically the live show movies of Fairly Ever.
20:49
Yes. Yes. So, you kind of want to know what I went through. Yeah. Please tell us everything we can share.
20:56
There's so much happen. Horrible. Millions everywhere.
21:01
It was a ghost nightmare. Do you think they buy you? Nope.
21:08
Okay, people. As you can see, the villains are my faves. So, it was an
21:14
absolute blast. And for a show that sports so many Disney villains, I tell
21:20
you backstage and everyone who I had to work with was a true hero. So, just
21:25
because I've heard a little bit, how many people here have seen our brand new villain show?
21:31
All right. Who won? Who won?
21:37
All right. I love it. I love it. Well, for our fans in the audience who
21:43
have had a chance to see that, can you tell us a little bit about the show? Sure. Sure. Sure. Sure. Okay. So, at the
21:48
villainous part of our show, the magic mirror invites the audience to his realm
21:56
of mirrors to help him answer the question that he is hearing relentlessly
22:02
from every single villain cuz they all want to know who is the most
22:07
misunderstood of all. And in our show, we've got plenty of villains. You will
22:13
see the delightfully deranged Carella Deville. you. Oh, gorilla fans, let me
22:18
hear you. You will see the elegant, fierce, and oh
22:24
so funny Captain Hook. Yes. I think the most wicked fans are
22:30
right here. You all got to chime in next. And then, of course, the mistress of all evil, Maleficent.
22:41
Yes. Yes. Yes. One at a time, these three villains in their own unique way
22:47
step through the glass and take center stage to present their
22:52
own reason why they believe they have been so unfairly treated. But in the
22:59
end, it's up to you, the audience, to decide just who is the most misunderstood of all.
23:06
With so many super fans in the room, we all want to know all of the details. Can you share
23:12
all of the details from the slide you have? Oh, as much as we can right now. So,
23:17
some fun facts, please. Fun facts. Okay. Uh, I'll give you one. Give us three.
23:26
[Applause] The villains I've spoken. Okay. Number one, there are
23:33
83 different villains and Disney sidekicks in this show. I'm going to say it again.
23:41
83 different Disney villains and sidekicks that my fist friends is a new
23:46
record. Yes. Uh yes, there's another one. Uh in our
23:52
show, you might see on some of the screens there is a lot of digital surfaces to create the magic and to
23:59
allow the audience to go into the mirror realm. And when I say a lot of digital
24:05
surfaces, we have over 74 million LED pixels.
24:12
Millions. Wow. Yes. And to put that into perspective, that is 1 half the resolution of that
24:18
massive Las Vegas sphere. Wow. Yet our show is at 1/100th of that size.
24:26
And the last one, uh, another fun fact, this is one of my absolute fes. This is
24:32
one of my favorite uh storytelling devices in the show and one of my
24:37
favorite elements because I think it's a character. It is a large rolling mirror
24:43
that sometimes is reflective, sometimes is a portal allowing the guests to come to and from the mirror realm and
24:50
sometimes it's just scenery. And it stands at 174 in tall, which is the
24:56
exact size of an adult giraffe. Let's do it. We could take one of the
25:03
giraffes from Animal Kingdom and put it next to the mirror. Not going to say we didn't do it.
25:09
All right. Well, can we take it a step further, Mark?
25:15
I I'm now imagining you actually bringing the giraffe onto the stage. Come on. Come on. Give me your Mickey
25:22
bar. All right. For all my Animal Kingdom friends, this really did not happen.
25:30
Um, well, are there any hidden Easter eggs in the show? Those are like secrets.
25:35
I know. Like we're among friends. [Music]
25:41
All right. Okay. So, this is a secret. This is not out there. So, this is among
25:46
us, right? Right. Swear.
25:52
All right. Okay. So, when you first walk in a That's right. When you first walk into the theater, you see this wonderful
25:59
art deco uh kind of lotus design on the walls as part of the wallpaper. But as
26:04
the show evolves and different villains show up, that wallpaper keeps changing
26:13
with each villain. after Carella shows up, after Hook shows up, after Maleficent shows up, and at the end when
26:20
you come back again and see the show. When you leave, take a look at that wallpaper to see how many different
26:28
villains have left their mark. Seriously, I'm serious. I didn't know that. Well, there you Well, you got to come
26:33
and see. I've seen the show. I've seen the show twice and and I never knew that. Well, now I got to go back. That's amazing.
26:40
Bring it back. Okay. Come on, y'all. Let's go and see it. Um, you know, the one thing when I saw the show, Mark, I loved it. Loved
26:46
it. Loved it. You know, I also share your love of villains. And, you know, the one thing that really stood out to me is how guests are able to engage with
26:52
the villains in new ways. That's so cool. My favorite friend.
26:58
I just think it's really cool that the show can have a different ending based on what show you see in the audience
27:04
you're seeing. But Denise, I'd love to transition to top
27:10
in this destiny. Destiny. I'm ready.
27:18
We're very excited. Both heroes and villains from across the Disney universe are going to take center stage on the
27:24
Disney Destiny. We have what we like to call a fearsome assembly of schemers and
27:30
scoundrels. You like that? Schemers and scoundrels. That's right.
27:35
Well, I would love to know two things. First of all, which villains are we talking about
27:41
here? And second of all, what do you mean play with or interact with?
27:46
Okay, so let me ask you a question, Michelle. Okay, back to me. Ready? Who's your favorite villain?
27:52
My favorite villain is Kella Deville. There's a fancy here, too.
27:58
I happen to be wearing some of her colors today. I noticed. I have noticed. Yes. Well, Kruella Deville will be on the Disney
28:05
Destiny. Yes. And one of the fun things you can do with Kruella is engage with a show
28:12
called Treble Making with Kruella. Yes, Kruella has heard that dreadful song
28:18
that's been written about her. Raj has gotten so wrong she's completely misunderstood. And so she is counting on
28:26
a piano player and you the guests to create a new song for Cruelli. Yes.
28:32
write a new song for Kruella that will please her and will you actually perform it and sing it for her in troublemaking
28:38
with Kruella. So, right, we're writing a song.
28:44
Yes. To make her happy because if she's not happy, she will wreak havoc across the ship. So, we must make her happy.
28:49
Another fun thing guests can participate in is what we call the wretched runway.
28:56
[Applause] Yes, guests are able to participate in a
29:01
fashion show where they strut their stuff down the runway that will be in the grand hall. And yes, they will be
29:07
judged by that fashionista herself, Kruella Deville. So, walk the runway if
29:14
you dare. Wow. I love you. Such a subtle flower.
29:20
You can tell we have fun and love. Well, Mark, which is your favorite? Oh, yeah.
29:26
I'll after be immersed in so many villains. I'm going to be a little unconventional here.
29:33
I'm going to say the god of mischief.
29:39
[Applause] [Music] Loki in the house. Yes. Loki will be
29:44
joining us on the Disney Destiny app. He has shown up there. Yes. To proclaim
29:50
that this ship, this like pleasure vessel. Yes. He shall rule over this realm. He shall be king after all. And
29:56
roll over these fine guardians, you will find Loki roaming around the ship from time to time. He may or may not make a
30:04
proclamation every time he sees a balcony. And for those of you who have sat with us before, there are just a few
30:10
balconies aboard our ships. I'm just saying. Um, there's also some other fun engagements that you can have with Loki,
30:15
but I'm not going to say anymore. You're going to have to come sail with us to see all the fun you can have with Li.
30:22
Wow. So, we've talked about, we talked about Loki. Denise, who is your favorite villain?
30:28
You know, that is so hard. It's like asking which of, you know, who's your favorite child? I know which one mine is.
30:35
We love them all so much. So, of course, of course, we have to have the mistress of evil, magnificent,
30:42
she in this. And while she's still trying to get an invitation to something, she will be there. And if you
30:49
are brave enough, if you dare, you can join her and under her spell, which is a player experience that will happen
30:56
inside. Enter if you dare. And then of course,
31:02
okay, young, are you ready?
31:07
Are you ready? Yes. Dr. F.
31:12
part of the Disney [Applause] and we have an epic interaction with
31:19
him. It's called prixs with Dr. Vilier. And if you can find his undisclosed location, you may enter, you may sit
31:26
down at his table. And he may play a playing card trick for you and your
31:32
friends. Yes. Yes. There will also be what we
31:38
call a let's cook up a story which is a storytelling event about of course princess and the frog that Dr. Vileier
31:44
will make an appearance and he'll also be found wandering time to time throughout the grand hall. So he's
31:50
always looking to make some friends. So come on y'all come visit Dr. Basilier
31:55
and all the other villains of our destiny.
32:04
You know, yes, you know, I can't imagine, but you know, just a couple minutes.
32:09
Okay, so we've talked about Disney villains on land and Disney villains on
32:16
Let's not forget our international friends. Now, I've got an announcement,
32:22
folks, and it's about Hong Kong Disneyland. You're the first to hear
32:28
this. In two weeks, just two weeks, I'm happy to announce
32:35
uninvited a villainous takeover party. Part I need some reaper.
32:43
It is the biggest villainous party of all. It's part Cade, part street party,
32:49

[Music] So these are Disney villains
34:06
internationally on sea and here in the states. But what about here in our home
34:16
right here and now? Well, Dr. I've got a
34:22
friend on the other side of this curtain. Please help me welcome Disney
34:27
consumer products Syiano. [Music]
34:45
Welcome to party. Thank you. I'm so happy to be here. Isn't this so fabulous?
34:50
Yes. Very excited. It's a hard act to follow, but we will try. I know Denise and Mark are the best. So,
34:55
we've learned a bit about Disney villains experiences in life. Can you tell us a bit about Disney villains at
35:02
home? Sure. So, one way to bring these characters home and I'm excited to talk about today is we have a new Disney
35:09
Villains collection by Bath and Body Works. So, very exciting. Um, has
35:14
designed specific fragrances meant to like bring us into the worlds of her most iconic villains, the evil queen and
35:20
Maleficent. Well, I saw the princess connect collection last year at Bath & Body Works and it looked amazing. Could
35:27
you tell us a bit about how Maleficent Queen and their stories are represented
35:32
differently in this collection? Sure, I'd love to. Well, first of all, I was also a huge fan of the Disney
35:37
princess collection. I have to admit those scents like brought out my inner princess. Um, but similar to that, when
35:43
it comes to our two villains, the team has created very specific fragrances that's kind of meant to capture the
35:49
essence of their personalities. And I will also say perfect for fall and Halloween. Um, so yeah, we're excited to
35:56
share today. I will do my best to do this justice, but uh, first we have Maleficent, which was inspired by kind
36:03
of the dark enchanted forest she calls home. So you can try to imagine, you know, plum, berries, and some warm
36:10
woodsy notes. And next we have evil queen which you know of course having to be apple. Um but we also have some
36:17
vanilla suede and like pear just to kind of speak to that opulent side of her personality. So it's very exciting. Um
36:25
and it's hard to kind of talk about fragrances and do them justice. So I hope you all get to experience these for
36:31
yourself as we have an early look at product available exclusively to
36:37
Destination D23 guests this weekend. That's really exciting. And you also might have something
36:43
special in your giveaway bags today. So, take a look. Okay. I love a cliffhanger. Um, and I
36:51
also heard that you may actually have some Disney villains collection gift
36:56
baskets. Five lucky audience members. Yay.
37:03

37:49
spider people, don't worry. The Disney villain collection by members will be available online and in stores starting
37:56
September 3rd. But I'm here to have even more shares from
38:02
our friends at Collection. That's right. I'm excited to say that we're getting a
38:07
first look today for our Destination D23 fans at the newest villain joining our
38:12
Disney collector Darkness Descend series and that is none other than the sea witch herself, Ursula. I think my
38:19
personal favorite. Oh my I I think that this doll is just
38:25
so spectacular. The you know attention to detail on the tentacles, the hair,
38:30
everything looks amazing. And last year Last year's Maleficent doll from Mattel
38:36
collections definitely wow on collectors but how does this doll differ and stand
38:42
out on its own? Yeah. So this takes everything we loved about Maleficent. So that beautiful design and storytelling but you know
38:49
because it's Ursula of course there's like a dramatic twist. Um so her look is powerful. It's theatrical and I'd say
38:55
it's like dripping with attitude. Um sorry. Um, I'd say, yeah, this one, if
39:01
you can see, it has the iridescent neon tentacles. She has that iconic iconic smirk. And, you know, she's quite a
39:07
statement, I have to say. This one, what was the vision behind bringing Ursula's
39:12
larger than life personality into a collectible doll? Yeah. So, she's all about villainous
39:18
glam as we know. So, I think the goal of the team was to really capture that in a very elevated like high fashion way. And
39:26
I think the team did a beautiful job designing every detail from you can see her crown. She has her hair and even the
39:33
fabric they chose and it feels so bold, so elevated. And just see like unmistakably Ursula. There's something
39:40
so vibrant about all of the colors that you guys chose and it really feels like the the 2D animation is breathing in my
39:47
hands. It's amazing. Yes. Well, I know we all really want to know when will this Ursula collectible be available?
39:55
Michelle, sadly, we do have to wait until September 8th, but then they'll be available at mattelcreations.com.
40:02
September 8th is kind of soon, but also kind of far away.
40:08
I think we should have some people take some home today.
40:15
Okay. Well, today today's our lucky day and we have five uh Darkness to Sun
40:21

40:28

41:23
got me in a mood. [Music]
41:28
The thing about villains, you never know where they're going to appear. In a dark
41:34
ocean, in a storm, we see the tastiest of red.
41:41
[Music] Even heroes sometimes need to step into the shadows. And if you let me hear you
41:52
say you feel with the darkness, the intrigue of the mysterious and the fun of the mischievous. Let me hear you.
