The Walt Disney Company is having a much better year at the box office than recent previous years. This year Disney has already brought in over $2 billion at the domestic box office. This is the second time the House of Mouse has done this since 2019, the other being in 2022.
Disney has had quite a few contributors this year that have helped it surpass this milestone. Three of Disney’s movies are among the top five box office releases this year. This includes Inside Out 2, the most successful animated film of all time. It also includes Deadpool & Wolverine, the most successful R-rated film of all time. The third is Moana 2. Inside Out 2 brought in $652.9 million, Deadpool & Wolverine brought in $636.7 million, and Moana 2 has brought in $342 million to date.
The success at the box office comes before the arrival of Mufasa: The Lion King on Friday. It is projected to bring in $50 million on its opening weekend. On Christmas Day, James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown will arrive in theaters. This film is about the life of Bob Dylan.
The success at the box office for Disney is a welcome one after it struggled for several years under former Disney CEO Bob Chapek’s leadership. This prompted the return of Bob Iger to the CEO role. He has spent the last few years reorganizing and reenergizing Disney. His goal has been to set the company on the right track, move it into the world of streaming successfully, and also successfully help pick and mentor a successor.
