OpenAI announced today that it is shutting down Sora, its generative-AI video creation platform that was unveiled in 2024. This comes after Disney announced a $1 billion deal just three months ago. OpenAI shared the news in a statement, which said, “We’re saying goodbye to Sora. To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you. What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing.”
The announcement also noted, “We’ll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work.”
Three months ago, Disney announced a groundbreaking deal with OpenAI. This would have allowed Sora to generate user-prompted videos that utilized characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars. The fan-inspired videos that were created by Sora and ChatGPT Images, which utilized Disney’s licensed characters, could have ultimately ended up on Disney+.
Disney has ended its partnership with OpenAI. This means it will no longer take a $1 billion stake in the Sam Altman-led artificial-intelligence company. Disney released a statement saying, “As the nascent AI field advances rapidly, we respect OpenAI’s decision to exit the video generation business and to shift its priorities elsewhere. We appreciate the constructive collaboration between our teams and what we learned from it, and we will continue to engage with AI platforms to find new ways to meet fans where they are while responsibly embracing new technologies that respect IP and the rights of creators.”
This statement from Disney indicates that the company will continue to work on ways to utilize AI to connect with fans and creators. It does not specifically say that this will be in regard to user-prompted videos. The user-prompted videos that have been generated by AI have proven to be popular, albeit controversial. Many creators feel that this is taking work away from artists. Others feel that this is making things more accessible for aspiring creators. Only time will tell how this plays out.
Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro recently talked about AI, saying, “At Disney, creativity is always led by people that will always be the case. Our goal with AI is to empower human creativity and not replace it. We want to give artists and filmmakers and designers better tools so that they can focus on what they do best.” It isn’t known how far this applies in the realm of connecting with fans and their own creative content. It is possible that this could be a pivot point for the House of Mouse.
