Walt Disney World Celebrates World War II Veteran’s 101st Birthday with Special Flag Retreat at Magic Kingdom

World War II hero Herb Maneloveg celebrated his 101st birthday during a special Flag Retreat ceremony at Magic Kingdom on January 25th. This was just one of several ways that Walt Disney World Resort celebrated and honored this war hero. Herb served as a Private in the U.S. Army’s 106th Infantry Division during the Battle of the Bulge. It was during this battle that hew as wounded and later received a Purple Heart for the injuries he sustained.

Walt Disney World Resort celebrated this incredible birthday with a celebration that began with a journey down Main Street, U.S.A. There, Herb was able to see Cinderella Castle with his family. They were also able to enjoy a special viewing of the Festival of Fantasy Parade. During the parade, they saw several favorite Disney characters, including Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse.

“It’s a wish that is better than any wish I’ve ever had,” said Herb, after watching the Festival of Fantasy Parade. “To me, the important thing is family and they are here. It’s all I could ask for.”

“My father is a great guy, he was a serviceman, but he was also a great father, husband, and grandfather,” said Herbert’s daughter, Susan. “Thanks to Disney and how they honored him. The parade was great, he got attention from everybody, which was so sweet.”

A tradition at both the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland at the Disneyland Resort is the retiring of the American Flag. This special moment each day honors those who serve and have served their country. It’s a beautiful moment that is both patriotic and reflective. The Patriotic Flag Retreat is made even more special when there are veterans like Herb to honor. These are veterans who have given both courage and sacrifice while in service to their country.

The Walt Disney Company has continued to show its dedication and admiration to veterans, service members, and their families throughout the history of the company. This legacy began with Walt and Roy O. Disney, who both served the U.S.A. during World War I.

Moments like the Flag Retreat with Herb in attendance aren’t just special moments; they are historic moments.

The daily flag ceremonies date back to the openings of Disneyland in 1955 and Magic Kingdom in 1971. Each day, these ceremonies honor U.S. veterans and service members. At Magic Kingdom, a guest is chosen from the park’s daily visitors to serve as the “U.S. Armed Forces Representative of the Day” for the ceremony.

The Walt Disney Company recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, and this year, the United States of America is celebrating its 250th anniversary. Disney continues to be committed to sharing the incredible stories and legacies of U.S. service members, veterans, and their families.

Daps Magic would like to take off our hats and salute Herb Maneloveg. Thank you for your service! Join in wishing Herb a very happy 101st birthday!
