‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Flies Past $1 Billion at the Box Office

Avatar: Fire and Ash continues to light up the box office. On Saturday, the third film in the Disney Legend James Cameron franchise flew past $1 billion at the global box office. This comes as the film continues to show strength with moviegoers around the world, including in China, where it has continued to sell seats.

This milestone makes it the third Disney film that was released in 2025 to pass this milestone. The other two films were the live-action Lilo & Stitch and Zootopia 2, which is now the highest-grossing Disney animated film of all time. This milestone was reached by the newest Avatar with still more of the weekend to go. The full updates for the weekend’s take have yet to be released.

There had been recent discussion in the media about whether the final two films in the Avatar franchise would be made if Fire and Ash wasn’t successful enough. Cameron admitted to Matthew Belloni on his podcast that if this film didn’t make enough money, he was “absolutely” ready to walk away from it. “I’ve been in Avatar land for 20 years,” Cameron said. “Actually 30 years because I wrote it in ‘95, but I wasn’t working continuously on it for those first 10 years. Yeah, absolutely, sure. If this is where it ends, cool.” When asked about the open threads still in the story, Cameron responded, “There’s one open thread. I’ll write a book!”
