On this day in 1960, ‘Swiss Family Robinson’ opened in theaters. It was loosely based on the 1812 novel by Swiss author Johann David Wyss. A family en route to New Guinea is attacked by pirates and shipwrecked on a deserted island, filmed in real-world Tobago. The resourceful group builds an elaborate treehouse and learns to thrive despite the island’s hazards. ‘Swiss Family Robinson’ was one of the most successful family films ever made, earning $367 million in today’s money.
