Happy Holidays! For Mr. Daps and family, there is a recipe that dates back at least to his grandmother. This recipe has a couple of different names, but is most commonly known as a Jelly Roll. Grandma, even though she called it a Jelly Roll, has it as a Jam Whirl Pinwheel in the written recipe. While writing this, I find it funny that we call it a Jelly Roll as we use jam…. hrm… Generally, the Daps family will make it for breakfast/brunch on Christmas morning, Thanksgiving morning, or other special days. It isn’t a ton of work to make, and generally, it is a hit with everybody. Below is the recipe as written by Grandma and then shared through the years. Oh! And this feeds approximately four people, so quite often for the more extended family, we will at LEAST double it. It is also good as leftovers (heated or not).

Mr. Daps’ Family Jelly Roll Recipe
Serves: 4
Ingredients:
Jelly Roll
- 2/1/2 cups flour
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 5 tablespoons shortening (or butter)
- 1 egg, slightly beaten
- 6 tablespoons milk
- 1/2 cup raspberry jam
Drizzle
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk (approximately)
Directions
- Cut shortening (or butter) into flour, baking powder, and salt
- Slightly beat the egg and milk separately
- Add the egg/milk mixture to the flour mixture
- Stir gently until it becomes a soft dough
- Knead on a lightly floured board for about 30 seconds
- Roll into an oblong (rectangular) sheet that is about 1/8th inch thick
- Spread jam on the dough
- Very carefully roll the dough to make a long tube, almost like a cinnamon roll (don’t roll the short way, you want it to be a long and thin roll versus a short and thick roll at this point)
- Bring ends together and form a ring on a greased baking sheet
- Use scissors to cut most of the way through the dough at 1-inch intervals
- Turn each slice upwards
- Bake at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes (usually closer to 20 minutes)
- While the roll is baking, mix sugar and milkinto a drizzle (I often double this)
- When the Jelly Roll is lightly toasted on top, pull it out and let it cool for a few minutes
- While still warm (but not piping hot), gently pour the drizzle on top of the Jelly Roll
- Serve warm (I often serve with butter too, but it doesn’t necessarily need it)
I hope you enjoy this recipe! It’s a favorite in our family, and hopefully it will be for yours! Happy Holidays!
