‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Ignites Holiday Box Office

Avatar: Fire and Ash is now in theaters. The film opened with $12 million in box office preview receipts on Thursday night and an additional $24.5 on Friday for a total of $36.5 million. The film is on track to ignite the holiday box office with a $90 million opening weekend. Internationally, the film brought in an additional $100 million. $17.7 million of this was from China, and both France and Germany each brought in over $8 million. It is projected that globally the film will garner over $340 million over its first weekend.

Domestically, this may not be the strongest opening of the year. In fact, it won’t even rank in the top five. However, with the holiday run and the strength of the Avatar franchise, the film is expected to continue to grow legs and become the strongest Hollywood film of the year. It is expected to earn at least $400 domestically and $1.5 billion globally during the course of its theatrical run. This will make it the lowest-performing Avatar film at the box office. However, the only film that will have done better than the newest Avatar movie will be China’s Ne Zha 2.

The film makes fans who see it happy. It currently has a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A on CinemaScore. Only time will tell if the projections prove to be true and if this franchise continues to show the incredible popularity the first two movies have had.
