This weekend, Tron: Ares debuted in theaters with an opening of $33.5 million. The film is the third in the Tron franchise and stars Jared Leto as the program Ares, who comes into the physical world from the Grid. It had been expected that the film would bring in $40 to $45 million on its opening weekend domestically. It is believed that the film had a budget of $180 million before marketing. It has quite a hill to climb towards profitability. Tron: Ares follows Tron: Legacy, which was released 15 years ago. During the run of Tron: Legacy, the second movie in the franchise opened with $44 million domestically and went on to earn $409.9 million globally.

While this may not have been the strongest opening weekend for Tron: Ares, there is still cause for hope. Audiences gave the film generally positive scores. The audience score for Rotten Tomatoes sits at 87 percent. This is in contrast to the 57 percent that critics gave it. This could lead to word of mouth helping the film. In recent years, several films from the House of Mouse have seen this happen.
