On this day in 1930, the character that would become Pluto first appeared in the Mickey Mouse short ‘The Chain Gang.’ Pluto is one of two bloodhounds that chase after Mickey after he escapes from Peg-Leg Pete’s jail. He was drawn by Norm Ferguson, a cameraman with no formal training in art. The animation of the dogs was highly praised for its realism, and Pluto came back as Minnie’s pet “Rover” in ‘The Picnic.’ He would go on to appear in 89 shorts by 1953. [95 years ago in 2025]
