On this day in 2009, Buzz Lightyear returned to Earth with Space Shuttle Discovery after two missions aboard the International Space Station. The action figure was sent to space in 2008 as part of NASA’s “Toys in Space” educational initiative. His 450-day tenure on the ISS made him the longest-serving toy in space! This Buzz figure was the personal toy of a mission coordinator’s son. Buzz now lives in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.
