The Haunted Mansion at Tokyo Disneyland is an attraction that is similar, but different, to other iterations of the attraction around the world. At first glance, it is basically the same attraction as is found at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. However, with a closer look, the differences become apparent!
Last week, some of the Daps Magic team spent several days at the Tokyo Disney Resort. While there, they had the chance to experience the Haunted Mansion. Below is a look at this experience, along with some observations about the differences.
Differences
There is a laundry list of differences between the Tokyo Disneyland and Magic Kingdom versions of Haunted Mansion that we could list out. Instead, we are going to make some general observations about the differences. First off, the exterior of the mansion. Unlike the version at Magic Kingdom, the mansion at Tokyo Disneyland has a decrepit look as guests walk onto the grounds. There are broken windows and other damaged parts of the mansion that can be seen. This forebodes what is to come when guests enter. It is also reminiscent of the abandoned house that the town tells ghost tales about. Even more interesting, the Haunted Mansion is found in Fantasyland right next to it’s a small world!
Once inside, the differences continue. The experience is darker and creepier than the happy haunts found at other versions of the attraction. While not as scary as Phantom Manor at Disneyland Paris, this version of the attraction has a darkness to it. The storyline is also similar but different. As is the case in the Magic Kingdom, there is a story about love lost (to death), which leads to the master of the house hanging himself. There are slight differences in how his love dies, though.
At its core, the Haunted Mansion continues the tradition that was started in Disneyland of going through the mansion and then ending up in the yard with the Grim Grinning Ghosts. Below is a look at the different versions of the Haunted Mansion in Disney parks around the globe:
Haunted Mansion – Disneyland
Haunted Mansion – Magic Kingdom
Phantom Manor – Disneyland Paris
Mystic Manor – Hong Kong Disneyland
